Hi, has anyone seen the marks adaptors portal axles?
Pretty cool, good clearance, and keep standard handling because all standard suspension, no body lift etc.
They are pricey (cough cough) but they reckon you can get the same ground clearance running these axles and 35s, as if you were using standard axles and 43s!
Benny Russell was running the GU portals in his middy GQ Patrol at the recent Ateco winch challenge. He broke both GU front CV's and atleast one rear stub axle. Because they raise the vehicle quite a bit it becomes unstable at higher speeds, so he dropped the suspension down to almost stock lift. This then gives problems because of the reduced bump travel that you get.
For AU$18K for the set, I would be looking to spend money elsewhere.
you can get good 2nd hand Unimog portal axles complete for around AUS $1500 each ( remember hearing someonme bringing a shipping container full of them from germany to Aussie , they come with lockers standard as most mogs do , i think these are 404's or 406's ( 70's ) !
I reck'n vehicle's with portal axles/diff's ( Unimogs) have an insane ability to go places where most other 4x4's can only dream of , but when they get stuck , they are generally well & truly stuck & most 4x4's would'nt be able to get them out , need another Mog , 6x6 or bigger still ( unless you have very strong winch - 10 Tonne or more & a strong winch point )
here her for the coments above portals are a nice wish list item but the realalities are that if all that if all that is happening is that you are getting diffed get a good set of lockers a decent set of tyres and drive the line harder 16k will allow for this plus a lot left over for a serious piss drinking session. good luck
