Was only small numbers! Just before I left home I grabbed hilux-happy's number and text him just after 11am, ended up just being the two of us (his mate didn't get).

Image
Image

No big dramas but I got stuck in one of the first big holes we went into (not enough clearance for the underwater ruts). Took on some water but not as much as it's had in the past.

Up further we found a surf in a hole so spent some time recovering them and helping to get him running again.
Image
The engine died when he went in and there was water in the engine but after some effort it seemed to be running ok when we left them. Went on up to the pylons and I took of out to head home because had a friend who needed to get traveling south.

When we got to the Ashley we decided we had enough time to do a short section there from the road bridge to the village. Just as I turned off the road I saw a Civic backing out of the first ruts. He stopped and I was about to go round him but he comes up to me and working between every second word beginning with F and a thick European accent I figured that he was looking for help to pull some vehicle out of the water some where so he jumps in the civic and I follow him along the tracks and found what he was talking about.

Image

Amidst a flurry of talk and apologies from the girlfriend for 'indecent exposure' (pants must of got wet so was in 'er knickers and the driver was in his gruts at times - the mum was dry and the chap with the forgein accent was busy giving suggestions) we figured they had been driving around in the murky water and as they turned to come out they got too close to a hidden deep part (dug out by digger for swimming hole) and lost the back end in it. Some one had apparently tried to help but then just turned and disappeared much to their disgust.

I tried pulling him but was on real loose shingle, every time I tugged it came up a bit but the back end was still bobbing up and down and I just churned shingle. So I decided to winch. As it was I was on hand brake and standing on the brakes and still getting pulled down until it built up a pile of shingle in front of the wheels and we opened the door to let the Hyundai drain as it came out.

Got them out and it was totally wet even including the back section of the ceiling. The engine intake was wet so we pulled the spark plugs out and turned it over and I got wet from the water hitting the underside of the bonnet and straight out at me standing a meter or so from the vehicle. It didn't have any spark and the father had turned up with a large truck so I towed him along the river bed to the truck and they towed it away. - All in a day's play. ( I was meant to be working this afternoon but it didn't work out :D )

I think she appeared in one of the video clips for a while.

The vehicle was bought brand new about 6 months ago by the young fellow driving it. They said they go down the waimak a bit but I'm not sure if they meant in that vehicle.

um - they arent'. Haven't posted clips before... i guess ripway will host them?

One thing I did learn today is that I could do with MORE recovery gear. Not that I had to compromise at any point but a few extra things would have made it easier. Should probably keep an old rope in the truck to give to people who need to tow something away too. I smashed my hilift jack mount a few weeks ago after a rather hard bump so need to remount that too.

Yeah I should try youtube

I think the issues this computer has is the software. Its one of the secretaries machines and it gets all sorts of stuff on it - I like to run my machine clean and straight forward (unlike how I run my cruiser :D )

Ok got a few up there. Unfortunately cant get the first attempts of towing it out as they are too long for ripway to host. So there is:

last part of the winch out (camera man was also the winch master (and sympathizer) so didn't get it all)

The door opening formality - at about this time three other vehicles turned up

From there... to there... with that

whos trying to prove what? We (Rok, Nibby and myself along with others) have done the southside of the Waimak to pieces over quite a few years, We know the tracks quite well. So when we hear someone say they can do it no probs we know they are talking shit, especially on 33s. I think you were closer to the truth when you mentioned winching through it. I'm not trying to run you down, its great that you are keen to give it heaps. But we like to keep things honest.
By the way Rok doesn't have anything to prove, especially to you. Maybe if you came out on a real hardcore run with us you might appreciate where he's coming from. Revs don't make up for technique all the time.

AS I SAID I HAVE ONLY DONE THE TRACK ABOUT 4 TIMES AND I WENT DOWN THE HARDEST TRACKS I COULD FIND (MITE NOT BE THE SAME TRACKS YOU ARE THINKJING OF. MAYBE NOT NO PROBLEMS BUT THATS THE FUN OF IT. NOT TRYING TO UPSET ANYONE. I WOULD LOVE TO COME ALONG WITH YOU GUYS ONE DAY, THAT WOULD BE AWSOME TO SEE SOME HARDCORE GUYS GOING AT THE HARDER STUFF. TECHNIQUE HAS ALOT TO DO WITH IT, I AGREE. I THINK IN MY CASE ITS A LITTLE SKILL AND TECHNIQUE, ALOT OF MOMENTUM AND GAS, AND A LOT OF LUCK AND IF ALL ELSE FAILS I USE THE WINCH LIKE I SAID. ALL GOOD MATE AND IF YOU ARE KEEN YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO JOIN THE TRIP ON SATURDAY. WOULD BE GOOD TO HAVE SOME GUYS WITH ALOT OF EXPERIANCE OF THAT SIDE. 4 TIMES MAKES ME NO EXPERT.THE MORE THE BETTER.

How about trying the winch challege tracks out around reefton, or Mt greenland near Ross, or No Name rd or serpentine central otago. Don't you guys ever get sick of the wiamak or is it you just haven't had the repair bills yet for your bearings, seals etc. Come rock hopping up the Hapuku near Kaikoura, or push through snow over boulders up Ramsey Glacier.

WELL HONISTLY I DO OTHER TRACKS ASWELL, JUST THE WAIMAK IS EASY FOR EVERYONE TO GET TO. IT HAS A GOOD VARIETY OF SKILL LEVELS COVERED AND YOU ARE NEVER TO FAR FROM HELP. BUT AS FOR OTHER TRACKDS IN THE SOUTH ISLAND, IM ALWAYS KEEN FOR NEW GROUND. MAYBE WE SHOULD ORGANISE AN OVERNIGHT TRIP SOMEWHERE THAT SOMEONE KNOWS REAL WELL AND CAN BE DONE BY 4X4 WITH MUDS AND SNORKALS BUT DONT HAVE TO HAVE LIFTED TRUCKS. THEN MORE PEOPLE CAN COME AND GET SOME EXPEREANCE ON OTHER TRACKS, CHEERS AL FOR POINTING THAT OUT.
AS FOR BEARINGS AND SEALS WELL YEH I DO KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN.

CHEERS, STEVE

That all sounds great AL but it also sounds a fear bit out of my league i like many others are pretty new to it all and working just as hard on gaining experiance as i am at building my truck up, the waimak is a great place for some of us novice guys, each time i go i still try something new that i haven't made it through before or haven't had the balls or no how to have a go. I value your idea's/ suggestions but some of us have a wee bit to go before we make it to that level and i must say its pretty exciting each week doing something a little harder or challenging, I hope to make it up to the higher skill level but its not gona happen over night and i dont think there's anything wrong with practicing and learning each week, cheers
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
