Help with my sj410 t-case

Post by redzuki »

I've just brought a sj410 transfer case of trademe,I asked if it had a 4wd light plug and what year suzuki it was out of so i can do the rock lobster conversion. Now that i have it i have found it hasn't got a 4wd light plug so it is most likely not out of a 1985 410 like i was told :( .I am just woundering if it is possible to swap the front t-case housing from my 413 onto the 410 one so it has the 4wd light plug and wheather it is possible that it is out of a 1985 so i can do the conversion even thought it dosen't have the plug.

Its most probably not the right t/case for the swap . do a close count of the ratios , input to output flange etc . If its the right case it will be about 2.5 to 1 , a normal 410 case is about 2.2 to 1 I thing .
Do you really want the 4wd light working that much , to swap them over ? There is a post on the aussie site that says nothing in the 410 box can be used in the 413 but I dissagre But .... dont have them both apart yet to tell you .

Count the ratios and go from there .

Ive checked the ratios and i get about 2.6-2.7 turns of the input flange to 1 turn of the output in low range could this be right or am i doing somthing wrong.

By rocklobster do you mean chopping and changing the gears around to get a decent low range or just simply putting the 410 case straight in?

If you are choping and changing the actual 4wd light is not the issue, it is just a way of identifying which gearset you need...

Have a read of this site , should help sort out what needs to be done .

http://ironbark.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au/~jeff/xfer2.htm

And here is a graphocal of what happens .

http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/images/ ... .sized.gif

The two ratios are so close its a hard call without pulling them apart . There is a pic somewhere identifing all the different cases , will see if I can find it .

I mainly only want the 4wd light cause im fussy and it is a way of identifying if its the right one but i want the right transfer so im able to get it machined up to get the low low ratio later on ,also the drive flanges are smaller is this a way of identifying if its the right one.

pretty sure you have the wrong one if it doesnt have 4wd light. Mine is an 83 410 and I couldnt use transfer too do rocklobster conversion. Had too find an 84 box. no such thing as an 85 410 transfer, as this was the first year 413s were released. As Chris said only way too confirm is too split box and count teeth.
Keep an eye out for correct t/c, transforms a zuk offorad and much easier on drivetrain when you can crawl stuff

Hey
Goto groups.yahoo.com then sign up and then join the "nzook" group. Goto Files - Rockhopper and have a look at the document in there about identifying the cases and making them :)
Otherwise post your email and ill email them through...

But... you need a standard SJ413 (2.268) and a late 410 transfer or 413 ute (stockman) [these are rare] both are 2.511:1

The Early 410 2.557 are no use in building a rockhopper...

pretty sure the internals of the older boxes are not compatible with each other (size of shafts or something like that) But you still have a lower ratio box you can use with up to 30 inch tyres so still not a bad score. I found that with my old wagon (god I miss it - Alan better still be having fun with it) the rocklobster gearing wa too low for my 30 inch tyres unless I was doing dry rock faces or hill climbs then it was phenominal, but as for driveability in mud etc it was tooooooooo slow. In hindsight I would drop in the 410 t case and just utilise the lower ratio in high and low. Unless of course you want to crawl slow in which case just disregard my ramble.

The ironbark bendigo site was where I got the plans for mine and it was easy to assemble (just the machining that was the hard part).
