Hey guys,

i've brought a 1991 hilux surf ln130, It had the factory toyota radio in it, which was buggered.. I've changed it for a sony one, but I can't figure out how to make the electric aerial go up and down, and also when I put it all back together the light behind the heater sliders isn't going (i've checked the bulb and its not blown). i've checked the fuses on the drivers kick panel and there arn't any blown ones there.

Does anyone have any idea what might cause that, is there more fuses other than the engine bay ones?

Thanks for ya help :)

stuck a multimeter on the socket and got nothing..

but couldn't find blown fuse.. all the other lights are working as far as I know, like ashtray etc etc..

in that case must be a broken wire some were just cut the wires going to it & tap them in to the cigie light or something close

does the areial work? many are stuffed, as its been said put 12v directly onto the wire and see if it goes

You didn't accidentally use the lumination wire for a ground when you put your new stereo in did you?

I didn't hook up any of the factory wires to ground, just plugged the aerial into the socket and the stereo earth to the chassis.

theres only one light thats not working i think, just the on behind the heater, unless the rear demister and hazzard light buttons are supposed to light up as well, coz they arn't.. in which case i might have done something wrong.

It was a pain, coz someone has done a real crappy job quickly putting the factory stereo back in it, and the wiring in the back of it is all buggered.

The stereo I put in is a Sony one, it still has the labels on the wires, so I know which ones are which on that side of it, just in the vehicle, where they are all different weird colors.. :)

had a play at lunch time.. the yellow wire didn't seem to do anything , but by accident i found a pink one that made it go up, but it didn't go down till i turned off the ignition (didn't go down after disconnecting wire), with toyota stereo it went down when stereo got switched off... would there be another wire to make it go down lol? this seems really complicated : :?

I have an after market stereo in my surf and the antenna goes down when the stereo is turned of
There are two accessory wires in my surf that have to be connected to make the Ariel as well factory amplifiers for the rear speakers to work .If one of the wires is disconnected the antenna stays up until I turn off the ignition.

Let me know if you cant get it sorted and ill open my dash up (agian  ) and find out the colors for you

awesome dude :)

I've found a wiring diagram on the net somewhere that apparently is for a 1991 surf, so i'll see how i go with that. Did all surfs have rear speakers? are they really obvious through the rear grills? coz i can't see any in there.

My surf had cloth covers over the rear of the grills that stopped you looking in

Major mission to pull out all the rear panels to access the speakers behind

The factory speakers are 4" size and 2 ohm impedance which means you have to get rid of the whole rear speaker/amplifier setup to upgrade them, as direct replacements are not available :(

I just mounted speakers behind the grills in the right position but im not happy with the sound and plan to pull it all out again and make custom enclosures for my new rear speakers

think im sorted now, thanks people....

found that the stereo i was using, while it had a wire for auto antenna it didn't make it work.. its old, so time for a new one i think :)

and just wired the heater light up to the illumination wire for the stereo as the stereo didn't have a place for that either. :)
