Was changing my cambelt today and put the new one on. Gave the motor a couple of turns by hand and then started it up. I hadn't put the crankshaft pully on and after a few seconds of running I heard a ping and the cambelt shot out of the engine bay. I thought the motor would have destroyed itself but it didn't make any funny noises so lined up the tdc again and started it up (with the crank pully on) and runs just fine. Was quite a relief.

I think most 8 valve motors are non tapping motors . Lucky thou .
I had the belt off the front of the diesel tug at work many years ago , alas no instructions for teh timing etc . after about a month put the thing back together just as I was going to wind it over by hand the boss came along . I said " I either have it or its 180 out , I'll wind it over and check " Boss says " she'll be right "and turned the key . It wasn't . Head off again
