Steering wobbles

Post by zuknut »

I've recently done a few mods to my 86 413. Among those I've raised it, put in a 1600 motor/power steering from an Escudo, and wider rims with 31" tyres.
All went well until a hit some potholes. The front end starts wobbling and continues until I brake. First time it done this I pulled over expecting one of the wheels to be hanging off.
The wheel nuts and steering components are all tight. I've since had a wheel alignment done, and the front wheels balanced, but that hasn't helped.
Has anyone had similar problems?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm not sure where to go from here.
Thanks :?

Can't really help except I have a similar issue with a Prado.

I get it after hitting a bump or braking and can get it out by flicking the steering.

It seems that it is my left front steering joint which seems to have some movement. Also had some one mention it might be one of the shocks.

Shocks do funny things when they get worn. We had a car that would turn left if you went down a bump and right when you went up one - turned out to be one rear shockie!

This concept is also known as "death wobble". I don't have much knowledge of Suzukis but here is an article that explains what it is, what the possible causes are and what ought to be done about it.

I know its Jeep related article, but similar concepts apply to all coil sprung off-roaders. Hope this helps.

I've done the same mods recently and encountered the same problem. Turns out one of my shocks was stuffed. Also the spring bushes were knackered and the 2 inch longer shackles had opened up allowing quite a lot of play. Driving it became similar to steering a boat in a long ocean swell. Needed 2 lanes to control it.
So I got new shocks plus replaced some bushes and installed washers to take out the play in the shackles. Did the trick.

I would look at the bushes, sounds like they are gone or moving, a mechanic friend had something similar (A guy missed his driveway and went straight into the kerb). He (the mechanic) ended up pulling them to see and they were gone and so bad the shock had allowed them to rotate and spin allowing the shackles to move forward back up and down (rotating the bush with it).

This was the passenger side moving only. How long since you last replaced the bushes? getting offroad the mud and large movement seems to eat them.
