Hi guys and gals. I got this hilux with one of these umm lemons. I need some advise on getting a bit more grunt out of it with minimal cost. The engine has had a leaking water pump.... and it has been heat seized. We have got it unseized but havent replaced the water pump yet but got a spare non turbo 2.4 with the truck. It does go but seems to be a bit "lacking". I realise that these aren't a powerpack but this seems gutless compared to my brothers 2.8 Irmischer.
Being mechanically inclined and having a pretty well equipped garage I can make or bodge together most things so open to suggestions.
Another issue I have is that you cant turn it off with the key.....
I haven't taken possession of the truck yet so havent actually looked under the bonnet yet (I got it from my father so I dont think he will rip me off!!!) this is just what the old man told me that was wrong with it.
If anyone can shed any light, advice, criticsm(?) it will be appreciated

look for boost leaks between the turbo and the manifold, the two rubber sections deteriorate and leak air at these points this is the most likley reason they should have similar power.

Also look at what pressure you have at the manifold you should see between 8-12 PSI standard I think at the manifold, I suspect you see 4 or less as the rest leaks out.

Heat siezed I would also have a look at the head and the radiator (flush it) you may also want to do a exhaust from the turbo back if not done as the factory one is pretty sick and this helps remove the heat. As far as the turn off at the key I am not sure what the key does on a hilux diesel mine just works, I would suspect it stops the diesel pump.

Oh and water (a teaspoon full in a cylinder) can bend and kill a diesel.

Good luck with it and at that price you are pretty right anyway.

orright so it could be toast..... next question, hows about I bung the turbo on the non turbo motor? Im not too worried if the motor dont last, Im thinking along the lines of a 1uz or a 7mgte later on

That is quite common also the turbo oil lines etc is commonly swapped onto the 2.8 diesels too. If I was doing this I would also do the head gasket with the turbo one, the engine may not be stuffed but pulling the head (all toyotas crack heads they are fine until the crack gets too big) you will know. Just having been that hot I would check it, and also they prefer a good quantity of antifreeze replaced often for the alloy head.

As for an engine swap the 2jz supra goes well for Rick as another option, the 1uz is a common swap tho qand the engines are cheap just make sure you have the loom and afm if keeping the standard computer, if not it is easier to wire up!

You'll find that 2.8 Isuzu donk is a million times better than the Toy one... until they break... when the Isuzu one will cost you a million times more to fix :)

The 2.4TD has no guts... even when they are running good they have none... don't sweat it - if you're going to do a big horsepower swap later on then just run it as-is and live with it... save your money for the petrol you'll use :)

As Steve said, the 2JZ is a good one - Riks truck is a stunning example of that... as is Bills Prado... but the swap cost is high... alternatively use the 5M, 6M, 7M swap if you can find a manual bellhousing - cheaper option and easier swap.

Good luck with it

Well, took possession of the truck and drove it home... it goes pretty good actually. Solved the not turning off issue was a faulty turbo timer stuffed up under the dash!. Its got pretty tall rubber on it so might go down a size and might give it a bit better gearing, feels too tall in the gearing for me.

Had a tutu today and yes, one water pump that is leaking! Replaced the pump, removed all the air con rubbish (the condensor had a hole in it so no gas to worry about) and chucked a new cambelt on it, all the while learning that if you dont get the timing marks spot on that it dont go! After putting it together I tried to fire her up with no radiator in her to make sure I had it right.... thank god I did as I had it a tooth out on the crank. Re timed it and fired up first pop. Mint!
Was perusing Trade Me last night and found a VZN130 that was being wrecked locally and got the rear mechanism and tow bar cheap as. It was one of my old reacing mates!

oh and at a later date look seriously at the V6 holden motor as an option  nive cheap and easy to fix, you also have more room in the engine bay. Just look at the oil pickup.
