well i went out to the ashley today (even managed with one arm) with a mate who has a double cab hilux with a 3.8 commy engine and auto box(from the holden) anyway he got stuck and when trying to get out he had no drive in reverse, pulled him out and turned him around etc and decided best to head home, he pulled out up the hill and he pulled over, he had lost almost all drive in drive as well sort of like it was slipping, i towed him all the way home took the ropes off at his place etc and then he tried again and it was normal (worked fine in reverse and in drive)
any suggestions would be great thanks,

just a guess but it may have overheated, check the lines going from the trans to the radiator aren't kinked or crushed
or it may have shit in the auto trans sump when stirred up blocked the pickup filter
or it might be farked

yea kind of my thoughts as well, need to have a good look and see where everything goes and how its been done since he bought it with the conversion done it'll take a little investigating

Might have been angle where he was and the box was sucking air (not oil). It happens at steep hills as well. If thats the case, you would feel like its slipping.

While you are at it, might as well throw out the V6 and add a couple more cylinders

The auto may be fine ...
My '91 Surf does this when I get it wet

Turns out there is an electrical connection to the Auto trans and when I go through deep water it gets water in it and confuses the computer, and it stops the engine reving above 1500 rpm and acts like a slipping clutch (though it does not have one).
When it dries out every thing returns to normal.
Though yours has had a transplant, I would be checking any electrical connections to the transmission.

ok another thing to look at, although he can still rev the v6's nuts of it just goes no where like its in neutral, mu ha ha ha guess i should shut up about my lack of revving in my turbo diesel and be thankful that at least it always goes

Probably a result of the transplant

I think the auto may have lost oil on an angle like TJ said one of the holden conversions that I know of did the same, was fine 95 to 99% of the time.
Also the oil pickup on the holden for the v6 engine can starve the motor on some angles, reduces its life.
I think he sold it unsolved.

well a bit more info, it seems the conversion he has is from a vr commy which just so happen to have an electric auto tranny, it also seems that going anywhere near water with them stuffs them

, now its fixable for 700 ish but will probably happen again, so the plan is to bolt on the mechanical auto tranny from a vn which will bolt up sweet, but to do this he will have to run the vn ecu, does anyone no if they are compatabile eg have same plugs so he could just swap ecu's over without having to change the loom

Now thats interesting ...
How does that work ??
Does it have a bunch of solenoids doing the work ??
$700 is a lot of dollars ... what are they replacing ?? or is it the time taken to get to the bits that need replacing ??

it should work vr/vn engines are roughly the same,vs is where it all goes pear shaped,vn ecu is more punchy off the line anyways has a better memcal
