ok so lets say someone may have driven thru a river a touch fast this afternoon (mistake one) and then the truck died so waited a bit then restarted it (mistake two) after it spluttering a bit it cut out again so i realized something was wrong opened the engine and discovered a bit of water in my air filter case so dried that all out and all the pipe work and stuff and then left the car for bout 30 mins started it again and it didn't like it but spluttered and coughed for a bit then was fine and i drove home (couldn't call for a tow or anything due to not being anywhere near cellphone coverage or other people for that reason).
So my question is have i done anything majorly bad ie should i go to the mechanic to get it checked out or something its running ok now but don't want to cause more damage than anything. any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks
water in air intake

it was a bit funny for about 2min when i first restarted after drying it out very very smoky too for a bit tho seemed to run fine on the 20km drive home. no loss of power or weird noises that i noticed or any smoke again.
the filter only had a slight bit of water on it like not much but enough the electrics did get wet too so presumed thats what stopped it but worried cause i heard water and diesel engines arent close friends
and yeah snorkel is definatly first on the list to buy

If it's a safari they have a fuwel tank breather exposed to the air that can easily get water in it. Re-routwe it. Throw a litre of meths into the fuel tank, it wraps around the water molecul;e and burns it in the engine. I did this and everything worked just fine.

that is a handy hint to know

Is it safe to do with diesels?
oil seems natural colour but will do the change thanks, also found and used some wynns and crc stuff for the fuel and the engine that has a water dispersant in it so put that in too,
Looking at the system it has for air intake there is a umm a sump type thing with the air intake being near the top i wonder if thats for traping water before it gets in maybe

done similar thing in my last 2.8d hilux it started ran rough for 2 min's then fine then next day went to start it and it ran rough for 5min then fine, so i pulled the head off and #4 piston was about 2mm low, dropped sump and conrod was bent like banana and big end bearings and cranked where shot. so if i was you i'd get a compression check and look at replacing the big end bearings
