Rallywoods QBW 2008 rev up thread

Post by turoa »

so..... still on QBW? whos going to turn up from teh different parts of teh country? might be a bit early but who cares. What will be on the trip agenda? i.e trips into akas, aotea, odlins etc?

Rallywoods can be used as base, but for some people who have been there quite alot it might require some extra trips as rallywoods is quite easy?

dude, you're supposed to actually drive the tracks, rather than stay on the main road.

the last time I looked, the widowmaker wasn't that easy, and thats just one track.

Widowmaker is shut, they have felled trees etc over the track to make it impassable. I don't think that they want anyone doing it, especially in winter when it is wet. May change over summer when it is dry though.

 If there is any other south island guys or girls going we should get together and book the ferry as a club trip as we will get a cheaper crossing with the more trucks we have

Theres a hut onsite and plenty of camping space, theres a decent motor camp 25 mins away next to Turoa's place so you can have a shower and maybe do some emergency repairs at Tu's place

Have a chat to Mark or Handbrake maybe they can get a cheap ORE deal on the bluebridge for you....work out when you are going up and go up in convoy (yeehaa)

No need to re-write the good answer Mark gave the other day

costs $10 per vehicle per day and $5 per person to stay the night

Mark wrote:Fair question. I had heard lots about it but knew nothing of it until a few months ago as well.

It is a privately owned block of land (approx 500 acres I think) that is owned by about 4 people (or groups). Each owner has the private use of a 6 acre block to put a house on, etc. The rest is basically just bush covered and has lots of tracks all through it from forestry back in the old days.

In the middle of the property they have built a hut with bunks, kitchen, fireplace etc. But there is also a gazebo structure with a big fireplace in the middle that everybody spends most of the time around.

There is even running water, flushing toilet and an old generator for lighting, etc.

It's a very good setup, but a bit run down. The last time we were up there Paul was talking about rebuilding part of the hut and tidying things up a bit.

And the best part of all is that the 4wding is excellent. You have to expect a bit of damage when you go in there, so not really shiney suitable, but all sorts of options for other trucks.

You could ride in there, but the Akatarawa Forest which Rallywoods borders is a better option because of the size.

Here is a map that Cloggy created for last years gathering.

And here is some information about the place in general.

Sadam has already mentioned the price, so that should answer your questions

Have a look here for pictures and debrief from last year's QBW trip in there.
