Crossroads!

Post by Azza »

hiya all!...

I guess i'm posting this because I don't know what to do next... :?

I currently own a 87 Bighorn, my first ever 4x4, I bought it purely for it's functionally, I didn't realise I would get so 'hooked' (like some crazed junkie) into the whole 4x4 scene... I can honestly say that I love it!, and I can see myself getting even more involved in the sport over the next few years... maybe even compete someday

I've learned so much in the last few months reading everything that's been posted on ORE and there have been some really 'good buggers' on here that have helped me out when i've been stuck, not understanding something or just plain ignorent to the facts. sheesh, it took me ages to figure out why people were so keen on buying Warn Winches and not brand new ones instead

My truck goes well, The only time I get stuck is when I run out of ground clearance (having only 30" AT tyres on it), I like the Mud!!... no... I love the Mud!!! I want to do more in mud, I like the mudtan that is on my truck and at this point i'm not too interested in rock crawling and other types of 4x4 activities (though this may change once i get more experience  )

So, here I am at a bit of a crossroads... I love my truck! (it is after all, My First Truck) but maybe it's not as capable as what I might think and maybe it could be better... perhaps I should keep my truck and mod it to the max, get bigger tyres, increase the height, get a damn snorkle and winch...(the list seems endless) but then again perhaps it's a lost cause, maybe I should be looking at getting a another truck altogether to fullfill my primal desires...

I'm intending on paying a visit to Supralux to see what he has managed to achieve with his bighorn... and there's billyvanboheman that seems to have done some cool stuff to his truck, hopefully they can both shed some light on what can be done with my current POS

So what does everyone think?? i'm sure most of you have been faced with the decision at some point on whether to 'upgrade' or 'mod' your truck to suit your needs... being a practical, logical person, i'm certainly not interested in any 'bling' factor, it just has to be practical for it's intended purpose (anyone posting 'I should get a hilux' will probably get ignored unless they can give me a good reason WHY I should get a hilux  ) I'm even happy to look at getting a Lada  if this is considered the best beast for the job!

but then again... I already have a 'truck' that I like, so maybe I should just set it up the way I like for the conditions i'm into..

Enough waffling from me... Yours in confusion :?

2 options...mod it or sell it and get something else that eg Cruiser/Safari etc ..... depends on how you use it...maybe keep it and get a 2nd truck as a dedicated bush basher...something you don't care about denting etc.

My truck has it's fair share of dings, dents and scratches... it was on my list of criteria when I bought it so that I wouldn't ever get worried about taking it through rivers or bush bashing down some overgrown track  I don't have any problems with treating it in a manor to which it's accustomed

I already have a second vehicle (non 4x4), although my truck is my daily driver, I have considered keeping it as a weekender should I mod it seriously :D I think a third vehicle might be a bit too much for my driveway to cope

You've already said it dude  Even though people will give you heaps for owning a Bighorn, to a degree its unique, cause most truck you see are either Hiluxs, Safaris or Cruisers and even though there is good reason for that (read--cause there the best!) a properly modded Bighorn with some toyota bits  would be a capable truck and up to most things you throw it at. The people you need to speak to are probably Smokey first and if you decide to keep the Isuzu then talk to Supralux. Steve had a seriously ugly oops  i mean modded Bighorn that hes currently wrecking so he will have heaps of advice and maybe some parts as well

Opinions are like @ssholes, everyone has one including me, the trick is working through everyone opinions for good info.

If it is out of the box a new Landrover 90 off the showroom floor is about as good as you can get (but you would never live it down) , if you want power a 4.0 Jeep with a few mods (but they cost a little bit more than others) if you want to be different do the Bighorn if you want something everyone understands and has the Safari or Hilux.

No-one can make the choice for you but we can all advise on what you shortlist. I would make the bighorn go further for now (cheapest option) unless you are having issues with it.

every 4x4 has good and bad points and every driver is different the choice is yours when you narrow them down look at what people say the limitations are.

I like the FJ40's with the v8 in them personaly but I drive a hilux ute because I wanted the tray and the toyota relyability. Have a look at what others have and have done and see what style you fit. Have a go in my leaf sprung Hilux ute and see if you can put up with its vague steering and harsh ride standard.

Got a wealth of new information after a very lengthy phone conversation... Thanks Fitzy for making quite a few things clear to me about what I should be planning to do.

I guess the main revelation is that whatever I do will have to suit my requirements...

so....

I'm not planning to mod or buy anything worthy of competing... i'm going to stay right away from the whole subject and just concentrate on getting a good club truck up and running.

Roll on The Sheffield Mudplug, i'll be there looking at what trucks are capable of and getting more ideas about whether to buy something new or mod my existing truck.... you'll know me, i'll be the one asking all the questions
