Alternator woes

Well I had a fantastic day going down the Pahau river and up the Huranui river with many deep water xings, but bugger all mud.
Worst xing we had, 4 trucks were tied together for the xing, fast deep water.
Anyways I seem to have alternator probs, it aint charging bugger all. Almost home and electrics started playing up, radios cutting on n off, due to low voltage.
Checked battery when I got home with engine running (2Krpm) and only 9.45V at battery. Motor off and it climed to 10.5.
Does anyone know of possible faults, things or causes I should look at.
TD27 Auto Terrano.
I know nuthing at all about these beasties.
Will put the battery on charge over night so it has enough juice to crank her over to get me to work in the morning.
Maybee I also need to look at finding a bigger amperage one with vaccy pump thingamagij on it to take care of all my accessories too.
