3L or 5L ??????

Hi,Am after a bit of advice,My 91 Luxie has devoleped a tick tick ticking :shock: :shock: :shock: (metalic).
I was told today by one mechanic it was the shims ?
Was later told by head reconditioner that it would be the bearings on #4 pot letting go and the pistons hitting the valves,as i had this exact same problem on my 84 luxie last week and that is now making more racket than a midget with a sledge hammer i think its time to repower the old girl.
Question which motor is better value for money
1.second hand 3L $2900 plus gst
2.recoed 3L $3900 plus gst
3.recoed 5L $4900 plus gst
This is for a flat deck S/C that spends all day loaded with about 3/4 ton of gear and full loaded trailor.(the present motor seemed ok for power)

Also was wondering,i just had new headers fitted to it.
If I repower with 5L will these still fit.
Thanks in advance.
Richard.

If you went for the 3L, an extra thou for the recon is worth spending. Depends to what extent its been reconned.

I just happen to have put a 5L in place of the "Tired" 3L in my LN106.

I tested a few hiluxs and hiaces through my work with 3L and 5L engines and found the 5L had more "oomph" in the higher rev range where the 3L struggled

It was a straight bolt in job, all the ac, alternator, engine mounts bolted on no prob at all, as well as bolting to the Trans and yes, your headers would bolt on cause externally, there is no difference between the 3L and the 5L, even the same cambelt on both

and the best thing is, externally, the WOF people cant tell the diff between a 2L, 3L or 5L so no WOF issues :lol:

although i think that the 3L intake pipe work is restricting air flow, particularly the one from the airbox to the manifold

any question, PM me, only to happy to help.

I would go the 5L, it is not a huge performance jump but just has that little bit more. I got to drive a 5L in a hilux on a farm and found it just that bit better than my 3l, felt almost like my 4y petrol with standard tyres.

As said it just bolts in place so it looks just like the factory and takes just as much time to fit.

I think since it uses all the same mounts, is the same series and probably is only slightly higher in output you would actually get away with fitting it without legal worries anyway...

Excuse my ignorance... 8) I know the 3L, what's a 5L? Is that the 3.0 diesel? And being an "L", would this bolt to a 2LT gearbox?

Hi yep the 3L is the 3.0 litre diesel,and i belive you are right it will bolt to the 2lt gearbox.
Well have had to keep on driving the buggered hilux and now she's really starting to make a racket.
Thanks for your advice so far i will have to make a decsion in the next day or two.
How easy is it to pull the old motor out and biff the new one in ?((I have a little mechanical aptitude and managed to replace cv's and swivel hub set on my other hilux)

NO, the 3L is a 2.8, the 5L is the 3.0 litre, :roll: but i guess thats what ya meant :oops:

changing the engines over is vairely straight forward, took me bout 2 weeks but when i got my lux, it already had the old donk pulled and stripped, had to figure out how it went back togethor :?

gimme a pm if ya need any advice or ya get stuck

Ok, just to get real technical......

So the 5L is the 3.0 (non turbo, I assume? Or can you get a 5LT?) And the other 3.0TD is a 1kz?? something like that. Are they a different block to a 5L? And how recently did they make 5L's?

Just curious, if anyone knows....... :wink:

Here the addons fo your viewing and these apply to all L' series engines

2LTE
L= L series
T= Turbo
E= Electronic Injection

the 2L came with T and TE
3L only came as non T and non E (I think)

the 5L came as 5L and 5LE although for your conversion i would stick to the 5L unless ya wanna mess round with computers and wiring

they started to come out around 97-98 in hilux and Hiace and ended around 2003-2004 when it was replaced with the KD

and yes, the 1KZTE is a different block and bell housing pattern

Bugger the keyboard musta been on the blink.you are correct 5L= 3.0 litre,sorry for any confusion.
Been going mad looking at every possible option,
at the mo looking likely to be the 3L fully recoed for $3900 plus tax,
(unless someone can give me a better option)
I just think the trucks only worth about 6000 so would be a waste to spend huge amount of dollars on it.
It also gets a very hard time so if i get another 3 years out of it i'll be rapt.

I've got a mint 3L for sale :wink: :wink: Was in our work van that was written off, but motor is still sweet. Motor is still in the van so you can hear it running if you want. Done just over 100000Kms so its still almost new. would certainly beat any other prices you've had. Definitely sell for less than $2000. Let me know if you're interested.

Cheers
