Hey guys just a quick question I bought some new Monroe Adventurer shocks off a guy on Trade Me for the front end of my LN106 and they dont look to good (although Im certainly no expert on the issue)

The shocks are simply to replace the old ones they are not extended I.e 50mm lift shocks.

They appear to be only the length of the shocks already on the truck as it sits normally, when they are fully extended. What I want to know is when I put them on the truck will they during articulation, extend a little bit (to give the factory standard amount of flex) or have I maybe been sent the wrong model of shock? The Monroe Code on the box is D6432 if anyone out there knows if these are the right ones?

you sure they are not the 2wd ifs front shocks?

well I bloody hope they arent! I mean I dont expect big travel as they are only standard height but i just thought that they should extend longer than the ones that are on the truck sitting there with its full weight on them? here is a link to the same ones i bought if that helps

if ya can't pull the shock any longer by hand, that is as far as they will extend and will limit ya artic to that length

but ya could lower the truck to take advantage of the shorter shocks

If you want long travel shocks, you need to specifically ask for them. The standard procedure of shock manufacturers is to make their shocks to factory specs... not longer.

The reason is that if they did that willy nilly they'd be in trouble... shocks must never fully close while the suspension is cycling, or you will end up using the shocks as bump-stops... a very bad idea if you want them to last more than 3 minutes... so to be safe, they are generally set to be factory length.

The front of a beam-axle hilux is good, in that the standard cycle length of the front suspension allows for at least 35mm more travel in the shocks without any problems... The Maxitrac shocks I sell are definitely long travel, and big bore (larger piston, oil capacity etc...) but I think most (if not all) of the Monroe Adventure stuff is stock length...

hey steve, I didnt expect these to be longer travel shocks than standard i knew they were standard length shocks when I bought them and that was cool as I just wanted to replace the worn ones in my truck.

What i meant in the first post if it wasnt quite clear was that when i got them it looked that they would not even give the factory standard amount of travel.

I pulled the first old shock off today to replace it and there is a big difference between the fully extended length of the standard toyota shock and the ones that I have just purchased check out a pic of the two side by side here:

Also the eye of the shock wouldnt fit into where it bilts to the axle (maybe a bit of force would do it but i dont want to mark them incase i have tom send them back)

if they are the wrong ones then i want to send them back for a full refund and I will then contact you steve for the right ones (and probabally the maxitrac ones you talked about) as I know I can trust you to get the right bits to me. Anyway will be interested to hear your thoughts after viewing the pic

First thought - they are IFS front shocks... I don't have my catalogue with me and I'm away from the office until tomorrow night - but they are not solid axle front shocks...

If you want some Maxitrac ones (I guess make sure you can return those ones first) then give me a shout, I have a set handy... otherwise the correct Monroes should be the same length as the factory ones

Did you buy them as solid axle ones? Could be a genuine mistake, could be just a complete lack of understanding of 4WD parts...

Thanks for the confirmation Steve I will contact the seller first thing on Monday and advise that I will be returning them and that I want a refund of my money and freight costs (i dont think this is unreasonable as they sent them and they didnt turn up so re sent them a week later and they have now turned out to be the wrong ones!)

I will PM you re that pair of maxi trac shocks you might have im keen on them asap!

well the shocks have been returned and with the seller for a week now - i expect to be refunded tommorow but what a lot of shagging around i wont name the guys but be wary of buying any monroe shocks from companies in tauraunga that sell on trade me.

Thanks steve for the maxi trac shocks they made a huge difference on the drive back to queenstown I would definitley recommend replacing your old shocks to these ones to anyone with the same truck i know ill be coming back for the rear axle set soon!
