Drop shackles... how legal??

Post by De-Ranged »

I was just setting up the chassi and suspension for my lux ... and since I've got to build some longer shackles, I started thinking  what if I...

Anyway before I go any further with this, I just thought I'd find out if they are legal... I was looking at building them pin'able, to aviod excess body roll on road and with a couple of small tappered roller bearings to allow for twist

I know I'll have to get my welding cert as they are part of the suspension, what I want to know is if I make them to code will they let me bolt them on :D  :?

by the way I'd like to stick them to the ass of a set of XD falcon springs  should make for a bit of fun!

I wouldn't bother with the sissor type shackle, you'll find more than enough travel with the Falcon springs.

You'll find heaps of comment on the Superior Shackles on the Outerlimits site.

I have made my own folding shackles and they work really well, they let my suspension flex alot more both compressed and extended. I made them so i could pin them and i have found that without the pin the vehicle bounces and rolls real bad, but when pinned you can't notice them. I asked a certifier about them and he said they would have to be crack tested before he could say they where ok (costs a bit of money), but i have had 4 or 5 warrents done with them in and the mechanic has never said a word about them.

I'm not going to get them certified. They are working fine and i still get warrants with them. And i don't intend on causing a crash anytime soon. I have another pair sitting in my garage if anyone is interested, $200 plus freight, ono. They will fit a mu or a hilux. They where an experimental set i made, but are hardy any different to my current ones. Would use them but i like my other ones a little better. THEY ARE NOT CERTIFIED.

How did you sort out the shocks so you could use all that movement?

With a lot of shagging around on a bank one day. removing shock's, etc, and then with a fork lift at work. It turned out that the factory shocks still had about 35 to 40 mm compression left in them when they where compressed as far as the axle would go. So i made new shock mounts/ spring clamp plates, that have the mount about 30 mm higher up than standard. On an articulation ramp i score 741 with the shackles pinned and 841 un-pinned. I am going to change the shock mounts again so they like a hilux set-up i think.
