Safari TPS issues

I am still having a few problems with the TPS on the Safari.
The original was no good, so was taken off, and all was fine, the prroblems arise when water gets into the plug.
If the plug gets wet, I lose all power, and blow huge clouds of black smoke.
How do the sensors work, and what is their purpose? I thought they were only on auto's, or petrols. not diesel manuals
Does it adjust the butterfly in the air intake, and if so, can I simply remove the butterfly?
Cheers,
Dave

Get rid of the butterfly, would be better to make up a whole new intake horn, wouldn't be hard to do.
Cheers, Jeff.

What year is your safari? A tps has a ground wire and a feed wire (norm 5volts on 12v vehicle). The third wire is output. At idle output approx 0.7v and as accelerator pedal depressed voltage rises smothly to 5v. Can check with voltmeter and key on engine off.

Mines a 1992 import, so 24v system, unless this remains 12v?
Does having this disconnected cause problems? What is its purpose?
I have a spare tps, but no mounting screws, so even plugging it in and leaving taped up out of the way causes problems, so I have taken it off again.
If I do mount it again, I notice there is room to adjust it on the pump as it is slotted so can be twisted. Does a mechanic need to do this?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Well its been a while but used to adjust them to get betted gear change on autos. U can adjust on pump if u cant get enough travel when tps is twisted to get idle voltage. Im not sure on this manual safari but maybe it controls diesel govenor on pump??? Thats seems logical if its causing black smoke.

Im assuming yours is disel but if its petrol its a very inportant feedback sensor to the Ecu for fuel injection operation.
