All,

It's not just the West Coast Conservation Management Strategy that DOC are reviewing, there are other areas too:

Code: Select all

Auckland Conservation Management Strategy Review
       - Current one expires 30 June 2010
Northland Conservation Management Strategy
       - They are asking for participation.
       - Current CMS expires in 2009.
Waikato Conservation Management Strategy -
       - draft CMS will be developed by September 2007

Information and updates about these are available here:

Bill, thanks for posting that up and it's not even a complete list as there is also the East Coast/ Hawkes Bay CMS too.

What we need to do is to have input before the official "Draft" is finalised as it is that document that needs to have the right words in it.

Otherwise we get the same situation as the West Coast draft CMS where we have to argue to be included. We need to be included and have the "public" argue to have us limited...if that's what they want. At present DOC are not giving that option!

People need to contact the person in each conservancy who is listed and request that you are put on the DOC contact list for any meetings to develop the draft for the CMS. The more people monitoring DOC for possible meetings, the less we are likely to miss any.

From reading through the DOC site, they are asking for comments, suggestions, participation etc well before they start drafting the CMS, its just not well publicised.

Bill, they may indicate that intention but in reality it seems that none of the conservancies are all that enthusiastic about having discussion beforehand. Most I've contacted indicate that they will have meetings, but only a month or so before releasing the draft. By that stage I suspect there would be reluctance to make major changes, or even minor ones.

That's why I believe that a concerted 4x4 show of interest could force their hand.

Now that everyone has sent off their comments to the West Coast conservancy, it's now the time to stay focused and show a strong interest in the other CMS's that are pending. Bill has provided an initial list at the start of this thread.

Go to that DOC webpage and send emails asking to be kept informed about meetings and CMS progress.

It is much easier to change things before a draft CMS is published.
