toyota 1kz transmission drop

I Was in the process of dropping the auto off the back of my 3.0td surf till I squashed my finger removing the exhaust nuts. so while I'm having a breather I was thinking about ways to get at the top bolts of the bell housing. :?: The next step is to remove these bell housing bolts for which the top ones seem to be near impossible to see let alone get at. Has anyone done this on the later surfs and can shed some light as howto get at them. I am dropping the tranny off so I can replace a rear leaking main seal. I am thinking ill have to undo the engine mounts so the whole lot can tilt.

Woah slow down Mike

Is your rear seal on the transfer case got a leak ??
I'm sure you can change that with the box in the truck, or worst case only take the transfer case off !

nope main engine seal leak. Diesel oil is coming out of the bell housing which can only come from one place. the rear main seal around the crank :cry: Its a major job I know but I can't afford to get it done in a shop so have no choice but to undertake myself.

Can you unbolt the crossmember and let the whole thing tip down to get at them? the other alternative is, as you say, to unbolt the engine mounts as well and pull the whole shooting-box forward.

There could be some space at the shed you could use for a couple of days if needs be, and a chain block... and a beer fridge... :D

If it's a similar set-up to the older surfs, I have found a way to undo bell-housing bolts.

Involves cutting a perfectly good crescent / ring combination in half, and a long lever....

You slip the end of the half (sob) spanner over the bolt (you may need to bend the spanner laterally also) - I think it's a (perfectly good as I said before) 17 spanner -

Then you get this tube that doesn't bend and stick it in between the firewall and the motor. Then you realise that you might have to bend the tube to get enough "throw"

Pick up the end of the spanner with the tube, and lean on it

Try not to bash anything like a hose or a electrical cable

That's the only way I could drop the starter motor on my truck without rebuilding the diesel fuel system and various other bits and pieces which I can't name let alone understand.....

Can be done, but if you can easily drop the motor, that might be "easier"...

Hmmm either way I guess its going to be painful. At least I'll come away knowing how to do it and knowing that I'm never going to do it again :afro:

I will try dropping the cross member(already unbolted and on a jack) and look at the engine mounts. Cheers for the offer steve but alas its already on stands with all the drive bits disconnected. :wink: Although the beer sounds good :D Anyway it won't be as bad as it sounds cause hopefully padero will give me a hand again. quite handy having someone that can stand up under the car :shock:

Ive got the box ready to come out and on a cradle but the stupid speedo cable just wont come out. So I thought maybe the big plug next to it has something to do with it. So I removed the cap and took the plunger out but alas nothing. Now I cant get the plunger in all the way and it seems to have jammed halfway not wanting to come out or go in. Can someone please tell me how to get the speedo cable out and also what this plunger actually is and how to get it back in. Here is a pic. Landrovers are so much easier to work on :wink:

Ok box is coming down tomorrow, cable is kick down cable, plunger hopefully will go back togeather tomorrow thanks to the advice from the guys at precesion transmissions here in chch. Thanks to guys from summit4x4 for getting that info for me and making sure I removed tourqe converter bolts before dropping.

going to be a long weekend putting all back togeather. I will do a full write up with pics on how to do it all cause it sure would have helped me :wink:

Gidday Mike, hope you get your truck back together with no problems. I thought I had it bad with the swim, I am still trying to source a speed sender unit. Seems like easter took its toll on all trucks. When your up and running we will have to do a day trip locally.

I think mine wasnt actually to much to do with the trip. It looks like its been leaking for a while but since there was so much crap inside the bell housing it took ages to come out. The seal was definitly well worn out and beyond its use by date. With the amount of dirt/oil buildup on the flywheel I removed I imagine it would be a couple of kgs lighter :shock: well couple hundred grams....it was caked!

I'm up for a day trip sometime. The old man is down here with his disco with hill descent control and traction control and is keen to take out. I'm thinking of the ashley. nothing to deep :wink:
