petefj40 is going soft
petefj40 is going soft
Hey there guys.
Incase anyones interested I thought I'd update you on new plans for my FJ40.
After rolling it at the Shefield event I'm doing away with the hardtop and getting a soft top made up. I've found a local guy, Stu Green, owner of "Trim Tech" that's bloody good with the upholstery! He's doing a total refit on my wee Bayliner at the moment and I'm so impressed. I've asked him to do a soft top for the 40 and he says he's done them before. Sweet! :bounce: I'll post some pix on the progress of it.
The other plans for the 40. I'm looking at getting a 70 series 5 speed and transfer box fitted to the Marks housing. Dave at Falsgrave Auto is helping me there. he recons around $1500 should get me a goody with a warranty. I've just had new master cylinders fitted for the clutch and brakes. Just have to fit a new slave cylinder to the clutch.
I'm thinkin of buying another set of 33's (with rims) so I can fit the 40 in the garage (damn it). I like the 35's but they are a real hassle at times. They didn't help me on the Shefield event at all. They reduced my turning circle and made me more top heavy. I think I'll keep them though.
That's about it for now.
Any advice anyone can think of to help would be great.
Take care.
Pete.

You didn't need to show everyone at obstacle #8 just how "top-heavy" your tyres could be tho

Good plans tho - keep the pics coming...

the diesel gearboxes have a longer (and skinnier) input shaft, about 67mm longer or something like that so check whether you've got a petrol or diesel box before you go looking for a replacement 5 speed

cant wait to see ya new look
But I am!! The doc said I should get over being hard. Soft is the only option.

The partner won't like me. She'll have to wear her hair in a net from now on.

I'm really looking forward to having the top down and hearing the noise come from the LS1 better. :bounce:

So am I.

Talking about bad driving and petefj40 learning the hard way??
This is what happen to me last weekend.
We parked up on the south side of Quail Island, (at 6.30pm) on an out going tide for 20mins. I knew i had to be careful. By the time I noticed the boat looking high and dry and rounding up the family to help push it back in the water, it was to late. (doh)
So I radioed Coast Guard on channel 16 asking for help. They alerted a commercial boat called the Kingfisher to transport my partner and her two young kids and I back to shore while leaving the Bayliner high and dry.
The tide wasn't high again till 3am the next morning and as it wasn't a life threatning retrieve I had to do it myself.
SO, I went to my brothers farm to pick up his jet boat in my Holden and asked Corey to drive my FJ40 and trailer back to Lyttleton and wait for me. (what a mate to do that for me)
We both were on the water at 1am heading to Quail Island to get my Bayliner back.
We did but i must say it was a freaky experience boating in the dark.
We got back to shore washing both boats down at around 2am.
What a mission.
Thanks Corey!!
Like the Shefield event, I learnt alot that day.
And keep learning everyday.

you have to be real carefull on that beach lots of people do that and the tide goes out a lot further.
I tied my jetboat to a log tied it real good went over the other side of the bank for a picnic. We climbed back and the boat was gone the log too
, then I saw another jetboat got his attention and he took me back to the main river and my boat in a real shallow area.
Got it in deeper water and went back to pickup the girlfriend, not sure why but she never went out in the boat again.
in fact that was pretty much the end of the relationship,
maybe we both should have gotten into the other jetboat.
Hindsight a wonderful thing also earmuffs she was not happy I left her.

I enjoyed reading that.
I don't feel so bad now.
I'm glad my partner is still with me. She saw the funny side of it straight off. She's an awsome person. I'm so lucky.
But thanks Steve. I hope you have a better partner by now.
This is what me 40 looks like now with the new 33's on. Now I can fit her in the garage, JUST. :bounce:
The hard top has gone, for good. The soft top will be made before summer.
Me and a couple of mates used it for bunny shooting last weekend. It's an awesome setup for spotlighting! Bunnies don't stand a chance!

How ya goin with the 5 spd box? I just put one from an FJ60 into my 40. It's about 90mm longer than the old 4 spd, so affects the driveshafts. If you do a rear spring flip, it moves the rear axle back enough so you don't have to shorten the rear driveshaft. It makes the handbrake cable a bit tight though....
