hi all. I joined the forum yesterday. I currently live in Oz but will be moving back to Auckland after 10 years in August.
I want to get into the 4wding when I get back and wanted some help deciding on what to start with.
What is the difference between Hilux/4Runner/Surf models?
What is the deal with diesel over there regarding taxes etc... Is it worth getting diesel or better off petrol?
I basically want something pretty cheap as a base and build it up, like a late 80's model Hilux.
thanks
Need help choosing

The hilux is the base model for all them and is the only one with a seperate deck, the four runner, SR5 and surf are all the same thing just different yrs, with the later model surf coming out with coils and an indipendent front.
Hmmm diesels being cheaper
I've got a mate with an early model diesel lux and he is convinced its more expensive once you add k's and I've heard similar coments onsite here, me I just like the sound of a petrol reving out
One thing that might change your call on the lux... I don't know if its local but recently I've noticed bottem end (old but legal) lux prices going up
the bottom end seems to be around $4000.00 now, twice what it was a yr ago....
Anyone else noticed this ???
Cheers Reece
Ps the Lux-Surf project it a common one and there is ALOT of resorces on the net and guys onsite who can help you out with advice and parts.

Diesel costs me $1.27 per Litre to run the Safari based on getting 450K's out of a tank.
It depends on how you drive and how your vehicle is tuned.
At work i get about 270K's out of a tank on the 2.8 hilux. I would hate to sit down and work out what that costs the comapany per litre!!!!!!
