Toyota Surf electric rear window trouble

I'm having alot of trouble with the electric rear window in my 84 surf and figured there is enough people on here with surfs that surely someone will have some answers.

Basically my rear window works when it feels like it. When It's not working I try blowing out the mechanism with the air compressor, spraying everything with crc, scraping important looking connections with a screwdriver, banging the tailgate every which way............all to no avail........then when it's good and ready the window works again on it's own.

For a start just the incab switch didn't operate it as it should (it will currently only wind the window down, not up again) But lately it has been not winding up or down with the key in the tailgate aswell, the problem definitely seems to be getting worse.

Any help would be great :D

Here is a couple of pics that may be relevant:

It is basicly the same set as my '91 Surf, there is a bunch of safety switches that will stop it working.
there is on on the left hand edge that stops it working in either direction if it is not closed properly, there is also one in the mount that the wiper sits on that stops the window moving if the wiper is not in its home postion.
I think that there is one more on the mechinisim too but I cant rember
I will have to have a look at my book when I get home.

Hi, I have the same prob with my 87 surf rear switch (inside) only winding down and not up. my key still works outside for now. also have the same probs with the drivers and passanger window switchs. I have pulled the switchs to bits and cleaned the contacts several times before. this works fine for a few months before crapping out again. I havent tried to pull apart the rear window switch to clean it yet. I will do when i get really brassed off with having to get out to wind the window up. The last time I priced these switchs from the pirates at Toyota they wanted mega$$. For me its just a matter of cleaning the contacts every few months.

There is a relay / control box behind the passenger side rear panel. Tucked between the cargo box and the tail gate.

my one packed up because water was getting squirted up inside the rear panel (where the wiring for the tail gate goes through) and soaked it until it cooked. :(

Was playing up and being very erratic before it pack up completely.

the old surfs also have one part way down the left had side to make sure that the roof is on (about 40cm from the back). id be guessing that would be your problem. and just repace the switch in the cab if cleaning it doesn't work.

Sometimes I've been able to fix the most frustrating electric window problems by taking a switch apart and slightly adjusting the angle of the boomerang shaped copper contact. They can get a little flattened out with years of use. Take care though if dismantling a switch as there's a couple of springs in there.
