thirsty terrano ....advice needed

Hi I have a 91 model terrano 2.7turbo automatic diesel and I feel its a bit heavy on fuel,
around town im only getting 140k's from 20 litres of diesel. I have replaced the
injectors , taken the injector pump out and had it checked and reset to original
factory specs. I have replaced the fuel filter and the air filter. What would be
a realistic expectation regards fuel consumption around town and on the highway
for this engine. I have searched the board and hjave been seeing reports of 9-10
litres per hundred k's, im around 14-15 litres per hundred k's.
Any opinions on what i could do to improve the economy? The engine seems to be in
good condition, doesn't burn any oil?
I have heard of ditching the EGR valve, would this have an effect on the fuel
consumption?
any advice will be gratefully recieved
Cheers dave

You may need the fuel pump tweaked. Most jap imports run rich and need winding back a little. If you are blowing heaps of black smoke, this could be a sign that the pump needs doing.

If driven with a heavy foot around town, that's about right.

Does the vehicle roll freely when pushed in neutral? Can you feel anything dragging?
Is there any smoke?

thanks for the replys, no there doesn't seem to have excess black smoke and the injector pump has been off and taken to the local diesel workshop and reset to what nissan designated. i was told that it was just slightly off and that it was in pretty good condition.
what about blanking off the egr valve, I have heard that it would allow the engine to breath easier ....is this so and if so I would asssume that it would be of some help regards fuel use.
I dont have a heavy foot , drive like miss daisy trying to get best mileage out of it.
cheers guys

friend of mine has just had his serviced by a top notch and cheap mechanic here in auckland and his turbo fuel pump or something was not working properly and using more effort to move the thing and was using more gas but now :thumleft:
