Toyota Prado electric rear locker being removed

I have purchased a prado electric rear locker and have all but removed it from the vehicle, what I want to know is if anyone knows just what electrics are required to run it?

From what I can see there is a 6 wire plug leading from the diff up into the body work, I started tracing the wires but ran out of daylight, are there any important controllers or solenoids or anything in the body of the truck?

It looks to me like I will have to trace/isolate the wires all the way from the diff, through the vehicle and up under the dash, probably removing the dash.

Any thoughts? I know some of you run electric rear lockers in your hiluxes, I think jafa may be one. Once again my Chiltons manual was as useful as a one legged man at an ar$e kicking party.

:D

if you look under new articles there is a link to toyota electric lockers wiring diagram .this works .i wired up mine without the relays using a double pole 3 position switch (on/off/on)which is pretty simple to do and works good as well .i used 7 core trailer flex which gave me an extra core for a indicator light cheers sig

Hey sig,

Your avatar pic is of a 40series cruiser, I was under the impression that the prado had a different e locker (fit's hiluxes) to that found in normal landcruisers. Is the wiring for your's the same as the prado one?

I can't actually find the link to the wiring link, could you please post it up? I searched for stuff to do with e lockers before posting but could'nt find anything. Thanks for your help :D

I've wired mine using the 4wd activation computer from a ln130 surf, there cheap as at pick a part and use the same plug. You just need to give it power and earth and a switch.

Thanks for the help guys, oldblue which one of those wiring diagrams is the prado one? or are they both just different ways to wire it up?

I'm not one for wiring so would it be best to hunt out the rest of the circuit and any possible switches and solenoids in the trucks body? I have to admit to not really knowing what I am looking at in those diagrams

Which has really sold me on going for an oldschool V8 over the new tech stuff :D

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated :D

They both will work I would choose the top one as it tells you when the locker is changing state (so you know when it is done and dont drive off with it half locked or unlocked).

Blue bet me to that post tho. Anyway you may need to use a gentle Persuader (SP?)(BFH or Big Friendly Hammer) on the back of the diff housing to get clearance, you also may need to modify the front of the housing a little too. Post up pick's of both diff housings and the differences and what you had to do to fit and what you would do differently.

Edit: Um Spel cheka did not work :P

Hey steve,

Thanks for picking the more complicated wiring diagram :P

Can the locker not be engaged "flat stick" do you have to come to a rest first?

RE: different diff housings..............the prado e locker is not for my hilux, I bought prado front and rear axles complete to be used "as is" in another project (although I may put a lsd in the front prado axle)

Still no-one has told me what to hunt out of the prado as far as switches and solenoids go :( It seems you all want me to wire up my own setup, I have to say you all have far too much faith in my abilities

Oh well I guess I will just pull the prado apart as much as I can :D

OK in the US they build one or other of these circuits, the factory computer control's the locker so it all goes up into the computer loom you won't be able to follow it as far as the switch if you take the diagram into Dick Smith they will grab all the bits you need.

with the electric locker the us say it can be engaged at 5kmh but it takes a while to engage and if you are still running full noise then you will break it as it only part engages before the torque is applied to it.

This is the same for disengaging if you drive away too quick it could still be locked with the external controller it locks and unlocks faster. Some times rolling the 4wd forward and back allow's it to engage.

Hell it sounds like too much trouble for you you better give it to me :D

Please? Go on...

Hey steve,

Thanks for all of that :D now looking at the diagrams makes alot more sense, basically the yellow line is where the 6 wire plug from the diff is eh? :D

So after that plug I don't need anything else from the truck, yay I can continue the tearout :D

um no you can't have it, it cost alot of money, more than the holden commodore V6 and two datsun 720 transfers put together. The axles were the most expensive part of the drivetrain

At least they should be tough :D Now to find a V8 and 5speed
