Hi Guys,

I am very new in this area, was thinking to have an offroad driving this weekend with my girlfriend and I was wondering if anyone could suggest an easy cruising drive around Auckland?

Hi bud, What sort of truck have you got? Geting harder and harder to find good spots close to Auckland. You could try Muriwai Beach, Get on to the beach at Muriwai and head north up the beach to the south head of the Kaipara Harbour. Stop when you get to the army bombing rainge thow, they dont like people in there. Make shaw you get on to the beach on an out going tide to!

Well, at the moment i only got a Toyota Rav4 which is not exactly the best 4x4 for hard stuff, that's why i am looking for a cruise off road trek/drive. I was looking at getting another car, but I am still looking around the forum to get informed and more knowledge at purchasing a more serious 4wd car.

Best bet when buying a new 4wd is to creat a list of things you want in it, then look for the models with the most of what you want.

It doesn't really matter what you pick but there are a few threads on what to buy if you search the site.

If you go down onto the beach remember to let air out of your tires (run 15 psi for a start not lower than and drive on the harder sand, take a shovel and possibly a few mat's or some carpet.

Sand is soft and if you get stuck dont keep spinning the wheels you dig a ramp and put the carpet on the ramp to drive out over it (you may need a couple of them).

Another cool trick is if you get a bucket of water and pour it over the sand it can give you better (firmer) grip.

Sorry I cant recommend any Auckland trips.

Not really, pretty much your only option is too join a club

There are still a couple around the place, but definately wouldn't recommend attempting them alone and if its been wet it would cause more problems quickly too...

Where abouts in Auckland are you? I'm on North Shore... pm your number and will give you a text next time were going out on a shinyish trip Do you have road tyres or AT's?

Oh and the North Island 4wd Tracks book isn't too much use anymore around Auckland Area...

i would recommend the muriwai drive, i do it every couple of weekend with my GF and its a cool drive. Best to try and time the low tide for sunset. few extra points if u know what i mean

Otherwise a drive thru the waitakere ranges out to Anawhata, piha, or karekare is fun. its all on a auckland map book anyway. We just drove out to Piha today. Anawhata is gravel from the piha road turn off.

Big-AL - Thanks for the comments, I will try to give it a go. Piha would be a really nice place to go to probably because of the scenery. Been surfing there before:) I took the notes and see what the whether is like, based on the swell in the area I believe that the whether should be nice for Saturday, but I would have to check up on that on Friday. Who knows I might end up diving and doing a 4wd cruise :):)

Icekayak - As you could see the reason I am looking for a cruisy 4wd drive is to avoid any major tracks/trails. I only got a Toyota Rav4 at the moment, so i don't actually have the right car to do hard 4wd tracks... but will get there . I will PM you my number and I would be very much keen to join whenever you go for a cruisy drive as I still havent got a proper 4wd car for hard stuff:) That could be really nice Thank you.

A mate of mine took a RAV4 to extreme park and was quite impressed how it preformed.

The RAV4 apparently out performed alot of the stock shineys on the trip

Just food for thought.

i had a RVR a few years back, just as my surfing wagon, i was really impressed at the places i took it. i think we would all be surprised at some of the places "full time 4wd" vehicles would go.

altho in saying that i got a capella wagon very very stuck on a mates farm ... icekayak could tell you about it ... took us overnight + a few hours to get it out.

will have to put some pics up later tonight

haha yes well... i'm sure there's some photos of that around too somewhere... but by the time i got there with a long rope it only took us a few attempts though...

The only issues that I have had with rav's on the shineier type run was ground clearance. Wheel placement was important and then you are quite impressed with just where they wil go
