The 3Y motor is good for about 500,000km or more if its looked after - you generally know with these when they are tired because they get noisy.

If its quiet then its probably ok - all 70hp of it :) Don't expect great power, you'll be disappointed...

Earlier this year i bought an 88 surf with a 3y. Was reliable, a bit gutless but good solid engine, used no oil, coolent etc. Only problem it went through a lot of petrol in proportion to its size, $90 to fill (using 96) and would only go about 350km.

I've since sold it and bought a surf with a 2.4nonturbo deisel, so much cheaper!

Just something to think about

The truck you are looking at has a solid front axel which has alot of potential for 4wding. The 3y should have a little more power than the diesel but not much and expect between 15 and 25Lper 100k. (15 is good for open road and 25 id expect round town). they are very reliable as people have said, just gutless. That looks like a good base truck to start with though. Depending on the price would be a good buy.

In my humble opinion the 2.4 diesel is better than the 3Y for 2 reasons - 1, it has better low-down torque and 2, its more economical to run. An LPG 3Y would be about the same or a touch cheaper than the diesel to run, but they are getting hard to find now.
