Gen 2 oiil usage

Post by 2MEKE »

I'm looking at buying a Gen 2 3.5 Pajero.
The owner says it uses about 1 litre of oil between changes.
How bad is this?
What is the usual cause?

Thanks

Depends how often he changes the oil :D

Most likely it is valve stem seals. Normal Mitsi thing. Mine uses more than that, probably 3 litres over 10000km which is still bugger all. To replace them with the head on is quite difficult otherwise its heads off - i'll be doing mine when I take the heads off shortly (another issue)

8 litres does 10000km including oil in sump. It does it when on overrun going down hill off throttle. As little as mine uses i have only ever noticed it once going down a long hill in 1st low. If you can see blue smoke it is burning alot more than that.

Hope that helps

He said he take in every 10000...no visible smoke just that it is using some.

What are these like for towing...a Kiwikraft 440 to be exact.
Probably about 650-800kg

They are a great motor for towing. Well my shorty with a manual is. They need to be doing 3000 rpm to pull the best (300NM @3000rpm) but doesn't disappoint when low in the rpm and if you want to go faster then just press a little harder  (153kw @5500rpm)
