the great game that we all love playing.
My surf has add 4wd system and the wee vaccume solinoid boxes in the engine bay up on the drivers side have been playing up making it get stuck in 4wd. if i swap the hoses over i can get it out.
Some times my truck will make a terrific graunching noise and that seems to be coming from the front right (though may just be the front and sounds like the right from the drivers side) to stop you have to slam on the breaks and some times you have to come to a complete stop. though occastionally it will just do it for a little blip then stop. i originally thought it was some thing to do with the front breaks as they were getting pretty stuffed so i overhaulled them and replaced the wheel bearings.
The noise sounds like metal on metal and you can feel a vibration through your feet. kindof like gears grinding but not quite. Its got me stumpped. I think it may have something to do with the 4wd sytem like the transferr case of front diff trying to engage when im driving.
any ideas?

I have a munual hub on the right hand side and thought that may have been the noise but it seemed ok when i took it apart to do the breaks etc.
(no hub on the left - add means that you actually have no engaging hubs it locks and the diff (left hand side axle) and transfer case i only have the hub on the right hand side to to stop the diff and stuff spinning when on road because of the front lokka.)
I won't say that it definately isn't the problem but like i said it looked ok when i took it apart.
keep guessing.

oh and the other problem is that its random. i can't make it do it. It happened afew months ago when i was down south. did it a couple of times then didn't do it again for a week till i was about to leave to go to dunedin and it did it every 3 or 4 minutes for the first hour. called into an AA place and they couldn't find anything wrong. He blew the dust out of the breaks and it was find all the way to dunas and to chch a couple of days later. Did it a couple of times up here before i did the breaks two weeks ago and just started again. also both hubs are were the same temp when it was doing it that time down south.

Its nothing to be concerned about, its the driveshaft starting to seize inside the hub. You need to drop the bolts off the top A-Arm, undo the CV flange bolts by the diff and remove both CV's, remove all the crap from the spline (wheel side) spray a whole load of degreaser shit through the hub, get a rag through with a screwdriver or something similar and start moving it backwards and forwards to clean all the crap out, fill it with a good grease, cover the CV spline and to the seal and put back in. Do both sides as they will be exactly the same condition now( well the otherside will go soon after).
How do i know this, the exact same thing happened to mine, it drove me nuts, I thought it was a loose brake pad or seizing hub or bearing spinning in the casing. The problem for me was it was random also and slamming the brakes on would fix it as well which just confused matters to no end. It did it with the hub engaged, dis-engaged, in 4wd.
Have fun, its good practice for removing those CV's, might as well check those boots as well why they are out.

Mike you are a bloody legand. Thats great to know. Had me worried, i thought i may have needed a new transfer case or some thing. Might see how it goes in the next few weeks as im right in the middle of exams and leave to go home the day i finish so won't really have time to do it. Hopefully i can make it down to Invers and do it down there.
Cheers
