Power Steering for a FJ40??

Hi there,
I own a 1984 FJ40 Landcruiser and am installing a 400ci chev engine. Due to the additional weight of this engine, I am wishing to install power steering. I have seen some installs which invlove the gearbox of the unit sticking out the front on the chassis rail. I was wishing to avoid this if possible. I have been advised that a Hilux power steering unit and pump can be used. Does anyone have any advice on how this is most easily acheived.
Thanks

will let you know how mine goes :D .. have the ifs box mounted to the side of the rail as my winch FILLS the gap in the front so no room for the usual powersteer conversion. check my pics for a look see if you want mate, hope its all strong enough :?

If you need an IFS power steering box from a Hilux Surf then I have a couple for sale - $80 each. I'm in Christchurch.

I believe its been done a few times before, but can't guarantee how long it will last pushing a big-ass heavy V8-laden 40 out of deep ruts... might pay to have a look on the ih8mud forum or the pirate board first...

Cressida or Crown, could you give more details on what would be needed eg year of vehicle to be getting pump and box from? Does the pivot arm match up etc What is involved in the install, is it a steering coloumn replacement job? Would it be easier to try and find a wrecked FJ40 with PS as the factory option to try and get?

yes my collum is played with, mid 80s toyota will do ,and yes youle need another pitman arm (which will not have the orig hole in the centre for the s/stabilizer like the cruiser one),a bit of welding cutting and shortning etc, where do ya live mate??

I'd be interested to get some more details too... just to say its too much "pissin around" doesn't help much...

Why a Cressida or crown box? Why a new pitman arm?

Why is it too hard to use the IFS surf one?

Is the car box not smaller than the surf one? therefor is it not likely to be weaker?

Some explaination would be good... as I said, I've never seen it done - if you've got some photos that would be good too.

well i am putting a hilux box in mine. replaced the old mount with one from southern 4wd, this puts the hilux box at the right angle to mate with the steering column. the only thing to watch is there are two types of box on a lux, one is a little shorter and you need to drop the 40's collumn a little to reach it. and of course the drop arm will need to be swapped so it remains the same as before.

if i had known before i started with this though i would have whacked on a 6o series box though, this eliminates the drag link and gizzmo that changes the force from the box from a front to back, into a sideways motion.
the columnn would have to be altered a little more but the box itself just needs to be bolted thru the chassis in the right place.
piece of easy
a mate out here has actually put the whole steering column in his, now has tilt adjustment and all the switches on the collumn too

Yup, you are using the standard Hilux ute power steer box mod, which is different again. This is the most common one apparently, which is why Southern 4WD made that bracket. It works pretty well I'm told.

If anyone wants to do that one then I have one of those power steer boxes available too :) Oh, and a complete steering column with the tilt adjustment etc.

I think you'll find the V8 is lighter than the 2F you're pulling out...

But that aside - go 60 series - really easy to fit if you use the whole shebang from steering wheel to pitman arm. It looks so "factory" that I've never had a problem with WOF without getting a cert. It's the 70 series gear that has the box hanging out the front
