ALI winch mountings

Post by long »

Hi al woundering if anyone has try making up a front bumper with a winch mounting useing HT ali ? i have the oppertunity to get hold of some to give it a shot mainly because it would be a lot lighter than useing mild steel and it would have about the same tensile strength as MS
Terrano TD 2.7 and a ssangyong Rexton

No reason why it shouldn't work well. BUT...

The thing to remember with alu (& especially HT alu) is to make damn sure there's next to no flex in your design. It will eventually fatigue & crack if there is. This is the main downside of alu bull bars, they can be made as strong as steel but they can't be bent straight after a ding without the risk of them cracking.

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.
