Surf LN130 turbo lights - advice needed please

Post by surf_tomo »

Hey. I have a Small problem with the turbo lights on my surf. Some times both come on (green and orange) but nearly always the orange one is on when the engine warms up - and stays on. The turbo doesnt seem to be over boosting??? My mechanic seamed to think their was no problem but i still want to make sure. Maby a dodgy connection or wireing im really not to sure. Any help would be great???

I really dont want to blow my baby up so thats why im a little concerned :)

cheers.

Hi - no I dont have a boost gauge, the truck just seams to be driving normaly etc.. not going like a rocket ship

However I see your point, this may be no idication at all with regards the turbo boost, i am not sure

So my question is why does your mechanic say you don't have a problem?

Lights normally mean some thing. I am not sure but I think you have lights for boost and EG temp.

I would think at the least the mechanic would have to set up a boost and pyrometer (measures EGT). Then done a test drive.

Too much boost will damage things. IE the waste gate is not working properly.

High EGT will damage the turbo, pistons etc. this could be as simple as a blocked air filter.....

Have you looked on http://www.ih8mud.com ?
Some very good ideas on their forums.

I don't have a surf but for a mechanic to say that the light on is not a problem is a bit dodgy in my opinion.

the orange light is the over boost light, if both are coming on at the same time then it might be a faulty sensor. When i had my old 2lt the orange light would come on when i got above about 2000rmp. replaced the wastgate actuator i think it was and it fixed it.

would recomend fittin boost gauge. wastegate actuators failing are fairly common on 2lt. but if orange light comes on at start up is more likely to be a sensor or vacum fault.

sounds like a sensor fault, if it was actually overboosting then the orange light would only come on under boost.

In the earlier ones I believe the sensors are 2 tube things about the size of 35mm film cartridges on the side of the air filter housing - not sure with the later ones, could be the same.

Having had a faulty wastegate actuator in my old Bundera a few years back, I can tell you there was no appreciable difference in power so don't take that as any indication... 30lb's of boost still probably wouldn't make those engines go any good :)
