PTO winch people! Wot do ya rekin???

Post by kruzin »

I have recently bought a BJ74 cruiza that has a PTO winch. I have heard all sorts of things on what to use as a sheer pin. Flag buying and breaking toyota sheer pins for $30 if a nail will do the same job! I have Put a ramset nail in there for now, but could put a 4 inch nail in there if a ramset nail is too stong? I have read other threads on here and people have said the 4 inch nail is too week and if im stuck deep in a bog or river im not really gonna want/ be able to change a broken pin..

Aw ok then well i might have to go that way then. Last thing i would want to do is start breaking things that the sheer pin was to prevent breaking.

I just put a few m4 8.8 grade bolts in my shear pin. Its on a bj70. They seem to do the job nicely and I have broken a few without any major problems. I got 10 for $3.

Also try a double line pull as it places less stress on system. It halves the speed and doubles the Torque.

Yea i try to use a pully block as much as i can, but if i cant then i dont want the ramset nail too strong or the 4 inch nail too week.

I just use a 4" nail (NOT GALV!) Seems to work well. When I had a hemp cored rope on it broke the rope before the shear pin. Current rope is stronger but haven't tested that setup to destruction yet :D

A mate has been using the same for years with no probs & his winch has done a shitload of work.

Cheers

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.

I use M4 grade 10 bolt & have only broken it once when I forgot to disengage the PTO and drove off. Very glad it broke! I know others who use a 4in nail with no problems..

Maby i should chuck the 4 inch nail back in because ramset nails are WAY stronger. But i barely attempt obstacles that im likely to get stuck really really bad so that things would start to break. Unless i got stuck on a tree stump in mud without knowing..

I use the 4" nail (normally Galv)

Have pulled a swamped vehicle up out of the river on one and have also broken them when my axle was hooked on a stump in the mud hole, so it seem to do the balance both ways ok.

I do feel that they get weak after a few uses tho - maybe not? I had one case where I tried pulling another vehicle out but broke the shear pin and ended up snatching him out instead. He was very stuck in a very unstuckable looking innocent bit of mud.
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

I drilled the hole out by a couple of mm and put in a mild steel bolt. Before this I was snapping toyota pins everytime I winched. ( Even using snatch blocks).

Had exactly the same thing recommended to me from Just Cruisers. But its easier to shove another 4" in so far...

You toyota guys use small sher pins, on a nissan we use 8.8 6m bolts.
The nissan pto unit off the gear box is a lot weaker than a toyota and we only break them from being lazy and not useing a snatch block (they make a nice rattleling noise, that goes away when you bring the revs up) then pop  And we still break the pins. But you need to know you winch and the tell tail singns to avoid major damage
