Too many choices!!!!

Buggered if i can decide.
I really liked my Simex's but can't justify another set. Its not a trailer vehicle.
I have a set of road a/t tyres.

I was thinking about your standard mud tyres, not competition tyres.
So it was either MTR's or BFG T/A's.

The MTR is only a 50/50 tyre, but i really like the tread on the side wall, especially as the safari has a 105mm wider track than toyota and it hammers the side walls!!!

The BFG, well they seem to have a very stiff straight side wall, but not a whole lot of tread on the side wall. Perhaps the straightness would make up for it?? They also have a more open tread pattern. Perhaps closer to the 60/40 mark.

The Maxxis MT-762 Bighorn seems to be another likely contender. Good side wall tread, and a reasonably open tread pattern, but not as open as the BFG from the pic's. The price would probably be quite good on those.

Simex J-trek 2's. Almost tempted to try a set, they may wear a bit better on the road than the Ex-treks perhaps?? I don't know any one thats had them, but i hear they aren't quite as good self cleaning wise.

They are only going to be used for four wheeling, as i have a set of road tyres i am for ever swapping around. Its just traveling to and from tracks and off on long adventures that nails them. So really Simex's are out of the question

I am thinking seriously about both the Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 and the BFG T/A.
BFG T/A are proven.
Maxxis i have know idea about, but they may be reasonably cheap.

Any imput from you buggers would be really appreciated, any thoughts, stories or hearsay, its all good!!!

get some mtrs (trust me if i hated them why have i just purchased my 5th set)mtrs have a dura wall puncture resistant side wall your gq will not pop em and they are the quietest on the road than any other tyre with the same pattern,just one more thing jt 2s have terrible road noise and holding abillity!!!.

I run Maxxis creepy crawlers, they are only available in 35inch though, they seem to be a great tyre, aren't as good in the mud as Simex but they come into their own in all other conditions rocks, sand, gravel, etc. They are still really good in the mud, don't get me wrong just not as good as the ET's. They are wearing really well and being cross ply are extremely strong in the side wall and have really big side biters.
I have a really light repowered Hilux and have let them down as low as 7psi and haven't popped a bead. I have done about 8000 k's on them and they hardly worn at all, as they were the same price as BFG MT's I thought I would give them a try and have to say it seems at this stage as if they were a great choice, anyways good luck with your choice but if you can run 35's these are a good choice

So what do ya reckon, about 2 or 3mm in over the 8000K?

Thats the Biggest problem, for the money i spend on the BFG's i could get a competition tyre.

So you payed about $350ish for the crawler??

MTR, i like the side walls, but i just don't think they are aggressive enough.
They would be a great touring tyre thats for sure!!!

Good to see they are available in 33's, my mate works at a tyre shop and he measured the wear at 1.4 mm, they are certainly better in the mud than a BFG (in my opinion), my father has 32inch simex ET's on his truck and I drive it occasionally, they are great in the mud no doubt, but they are wearing damn fast!
I paid $380 each but that was in August last year so they've probably come down.
I was on a trip to Westport for a week over Xmas and one of the chaps who runs 33 BFG's on his Prado commented (after seeing how my truck performed in all terrain conditions) that if they were available in 33 he would definately get a set next time he purchased tyres.
I think they are wearing extremely well on the road, they are only as noisy as the BFG's, but my vehicle is very light so can't comment as to how they would wear on a heavier vehicle

Im not all that keen on your run of the mill mud tyre.

Hows this for bad timing, all ready to get new tyres, then i see the two items on trade me i have been looking for, for age's.

A Holly Blue series Fuel pump for $265, retail at $440 and a Complete rear diff with factory locker and wiring loom for $800. You just can't win.
Oh and I'm moving at the end of the month. I need to attach the winch to an ATM machine and take it out into the bush

I run 33X12.5 BFG mud tyres. Ive found them really good, of course i cant say ive really owned any other set of mud tyres, haha. But ive found they serve me really well for the kind of 4wding i do. Like driving quite long distances to tracks, etc.

But i have the december issue of Aussie 4wding magazine(i think its december) and they did a huge mud tyre comparison for touring tyres and did a seperate comparison for competetion style mud tyres. Im at uni so i dont have the magazine here, but BFGs won the touring tyre comparison and the coopers came second, and i cant remember the following order of tyres. They tested them for on road perfomance, and for mud performance and on some rocks and things. they also go on about sidewall thickness etc, so it could be of help to you. If ya want more info on the article i might if i have time be able to scan it in and post it as a picture,lol, if that would work. Or i could photo copy and mail it to you, if you cant get hold of it.

I run Maxxis Creepies too in the 35s on a 10" rim.
I find them good in the mud (not really into mud though) excellent on the rocks and pleasent enough on the road.
They do seem to wear alittle fast but can't really say 'cos I don't do many ks on the road.
The other thing with them is that they are high in the crown so they wear here first.
I payed $360 in October last year and intend on running them into the ground

So all in all, I'd recomend them

Hah, turns out they aren't available in 33. The fact that they are on the genie web site and also in the Specialty Tyres cataloge he sent me has no bearing on it. They are available in the US only. Same with the MT- 762 Bighorn i was interested in.

So its back to the MTR of BFG T/A.

ok, i think i will base it on which of the two has the O/D closest to 33'.

Outa curiosity, can any one thinkof a tyre that is made in 33 X11.5 besides the Ex-Trek??

Yeah, i had them on the terrano, and we used to run them on our Hilux's at work. They weren't all that hard wearing on the road.

I had Kumhos M/s on the Surf. Only got 40000kms out of them.
Firestones ATXs are a good tyre. Sold them at 10000km to put the Maxxis's on and they were hardly worn at all. Bit noisey on the road though.

Yeah, i got a job with Environment Waikato, so its the big move back up to Ham.
31 X 10.5, nah, to small. I have 32 X 11.5 at the moment and drag the diff every where!!!!

I did a measure up the other day and 35's are going to be to much of a mission, so 33's it is.

My 32's are still mint, so my brothers going to put them on his Prado.

as for the tyres man, if your gonna run them as permanant tyres and do bush and road work,i'd go 35", a little bit of work getting them in and get much more clearance, if the 33,12.5's fit the 35's will be bloody close and better clearance, im pretty sure the price difference between the 33's and the 35's is about $20 a tyre from memory or less....

I may have to pay you a visit when I'm up and pinch one of your 35's for a test fit front and rear. I know a 2" body lift is all i will need, but the shagging around cutting the floor for the gear leavers, then having them 50mm further away from the steering wheel and then theres the radiator.......

Nah, 33's and my diff lock is the go. If some one made 34's they would squeeze in there just nicly!!!!!

As for the 4x4 people, there's my old man, who's loosing his nerve and getting more liberal with the go pedal in his old age, my brother who thinks he's the shiznit in his ponsonby tractor 3l Prado which badly needs some scratches to get rid of the layers of cacked on polish, theres Dan with his rough L200 which is more at home towing his TX3 Rally Car, and Dwayne, who is always keen, always up for spur of the moment missions but a constant lack of $$ keeps him close to home in his 3L surf. That boy can drive though!!!!!!

So there's no shortage of bod's!! I got invited on a trip with the Geyser land club from one of the guys on outerlimits4x4 so i will have to go some time and see what they are like. May be a good club to join. We will see.

Hope fully with my new job i will get access to some of the foresty blocks etc in the Waikato so that may be one to watch out for!!!!

i have the 36" simex's mate, they definatly wont fit under your nissan ,but we could try as i have them on the rims with the sweet offset ya never know but with the right rims mate the 35's will go i reakon,but yea for ease the 33"s will be sweet as

Sweet, I'm running the Maxxis Buckshots at the moment. I don't like them at all. The side walls are cut to sh1t due to lack of tread and the wide diffs.
I really need that side wall tread and protection!!!!

I think its just mainly that i went from ex treks on the Terrano to those run of the mill mud tyres on a heavy vehicle. They are probably not that bad for what they are

When i've moved, so towards the end of june when i have the money from my house, final pay, leave payout, super pay out and gain share pay out from work. I'll be bloody rolling in it for a short while

So yeah, when ever you get round to it man, i can wait for a good price

I joined Geyserland a couple of years ago as a complete novice. They are a good bunch. I suggest you go on some of their runs. I don't live in Rototrua anymore but have stayed a member and do most of my 4wding with them.

and anyone else who is in the vacinity, the prices i can get on tyres are pretty competetive so, if you want i could probably do tyres for whoever wants. they are through a guy i used to work for and he is only putting about $15 - $20 on top of his cost, which makes really good buying for us as opposed to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ from most tyre shops
