Isuzu MU Solid Axle Swap - Day 6 and 7: YEEHAAA! :D

Post by SupraLux »

Well, day 6 - simply welding. I have a good friend who is an artist. And his brush is a 3.2mm GP Arc rod... Damn he's good... its all welded up and looking great in the front. Thanks Mark. I didn't take any photos of the welding, but I will next time down there.

Day 7: it all came together. First of all, the axle mounted under the springs in the front:

Then I stood back and looked... OMFG! This is not a photoshop job... this is the truck at rest with stock suspension and tyres (although slightly flat) in the back.

Time to see how level I can get it... out with the old axle, which is spring-under:

...and in with the Hilux one... one miracle measurement is that the width of the spring centres is within 5mm between the MU and the Hilux - no spring pad relocation! Wow... never saw that little piece of luck coming.

Then bolt it all up and stand back:

Better than I imagined, although the front is too high... and there is a MAJOR problem - the front driveshaft. Heres the sticky point - the front driveshaft in this photo is drooped as low as it can go... its sitting on the crossmember. Looks like I am going to go with that crossmember I made after all (you can just see the driveshaft above the spring):

And forgetting that minor inconvenience, here it is again... a thing of beauty - although I think I'm going to go Falcons in the back to give a bit better flex and more height to balance the front. I considered lowering the front, but I want to put 37" goodyear MTRs under it, and they will settle as they are brand new... so I will lower it later if I need to by drilling the shackle hole through the chassis rail rather than using the standoff mount.

I'm keen - but there are some obstacles in my way... I need to work with polytech so there goes half the week... I have a valuer coming over to value our house on friday - theres 2 days of cleaning up here before he arrives... and theres the small matters of brakes, shocks, rear springs, steering, driveshafts, crossmember, etc.... I think I would fall asleep on the drive there even if I DID get it all done :P

Steve

PS: I was stoked on the way home... drove all the way with a huge grin... really happy with how its coming along, despite the problems.

PPS: do you still have those bent pipes? I need to mount my shocks...

Not too bad... heres a pic nearly side onto show its sitting reaonably nicely in the arch. When I re-spring the rear I will move it back as far as I can then trim to fit... wheelbase is the key, I want it as long as possible for stability when climbing.

Think I will be in Queenstown then... going down right on the end of the month...

Am still keen to get it finished tho... the 4 new long studs for the passenger side hub are being machined at the moment, so I can flip an arm for crossover, and I will have the driveshaft underway tomorrow too - hopefully for the weekend so I can actually drive it out of the shed and turn it around in circles :D

Brakes? who needs brakes? I don't need no stinkin brakes... :P

legendary... clever bastard... I like this - keep it coming :D

I have tried to find some prices for you re: the rugger but am having fun trying to tie down one particular part number to it... it seems there are three different possible springs and no one can tell me what shocks will go in the damn thing... but one thing is that apparently all 4 shocks are the same.

I need you to take a back one and a front one out and measure them closed and open, and wht type and size the pins/eyes are at each end, then measure your springs and how far the pin is from the front eye on both the front and the rear... all this before I can even start guessing at prices... damn, what a pain... can I sell you a Hilux? :)

Cheers
