3.9l rover experiences

Post by xj »

Hey all. I've a friend who is building a rig from scratch, so far hes got the patrol running gear under a disco chassis, but he also has a 3.9l Rover v8 to power it with, its done 35000miles. Hes never dealt with these before and is wanting to hear of specs, what the hp is, and of any experiences anyone has had with them, plusses minuses etc. any CONSTRUCTIVE input would be appreciated.
Cheers

Mark

about 180hp I think. They sound mint, heaps of low down torque. Distributor can be a problem as they dont like water, but a worthwhile upgrade is converting to an HEI dizzy.

They fly in a lightweight rig. I would have put one in my land rover if I had found one for the right price at the right time.

pics??

Ive had the 3.5 in mine for a while now (1 year  well it feels like ages) and love it, just acquired the 3.9 so will be so happy when its in.

Cant beat the sound of a rover 8

The 3.9 from a RR is a 9.35 compression putting out 181bhp (135kw) Torque is 232lbs or 314 Nm at 2600 rpm.

The later Disco engine (post '94) is slightly better at 185bhp (138kw) at 4750rpm and toque is 319Nm.

Better still if you can find one is the 4.6 which has 221 bhp (164kw) and 376Nm of torque at 3000rpm.

All good engines but with a little work especially with the heads and cams can be made to really perform. However they require regular maintenance in the form of oil changes. They wear very quickly internally if they don't have clean oil.

As already said they need good leads and water proofing around the dizzy (later 4.6 have power packs at rear of engine). And yes they sound very nice under load.

The other thing, like most engines, they don't like getting hot so a good radiator is a must. When over heated they crack heads, blocks etc.

They are excellent reviews guys...I have just bought a 98 Disco 3.9 V8 with 71k's and feel very happy with my purchase. They do sound amazing and I am now thinking of a new pipe to really allow that V8 to roar.
