Pays not to hold all ya eggs in one basket. If the multi radio sh*ts itself you loose your comms which could end up being a life line.

This is true
In my truck I have a truck mounted PRS(UHF), a Truck mounted CB(AM)
and a hand held PRS sitting in the center consol just in case

and it comes in very handy when you are out of your truck helping people

Not for much longer ... they are going secure digital ... to many bad guys making use of the information ...
I have noticed that they are using cell phones more and more till that happens so there is less and less to listen to.
I have 2 uniden units ...one AM and one UHF
I also have a pair of hand held UHF units which I give to others on the trip.
The scanner is a hand held unit because I toss it in my pocket when the pager goes off, it helps to know what sort of fire I'm turning out to ...

There is an asian guy I work with that like gadgets he already has a scanner that can pick up cell calls that are being bounced off the nearst tower and he says that in hong kong they have ones that can scan the secure digital voice and the secure digital text channels that are in america

it looks more like a LCD screen and he is just waiting to see what the frequenices will be here

I just brought a Uniden UN073X handheld.
It seems real good so far.
3 Watt..metal case & waterproof.
I got a handheld as it s easy to take out of vehicle when not in use & if i drown it it will still go if my electrics are dead.
Plus i couldnt be bothered with a hard wired one.
I got it off trademe brand new....about $80 cheaper than Dick Smith.

They get better coverage because they have a bunch of repeaters mounted on the hills through out the country.
They unlikely to make the frequencies available to the public as they share them with the fire service through out the country.

Time to revive an old topic.
I am in the market for a new UHF radio since my old one was stolen. I had a Uniden UH088 and had no complaints about it.
What I want to know is where the best deals are at the moment and what brand/model, people find easy/simple to use?
Is anyone using the Uniden UH012? How do you find it? Is the extra $ for the UH088 worth it?
I perfer to buy online as I can't be arsed going around retailers and listening to their sales pitch. But for $ savings I will brave the retail market.
Thanks
Jase.

The Dual UHF/VHF UH095-sx is no longer avaliable or in production, the Uniden 012-sx is no longer in production either I think
I am a dealer now for these radios...

these are avaliable in 66-88mhz and 136-174 VHF, in 450-527 and 476 (PRS), the one I have just got in is the 450-527, specs are 4w, 10hr+ lithium ion battery, 99 channels (still investigating if the police UHF can be loaded as listen only), different antenna's are avaliable as are a range of headsets including waterproof ones, I have a GME 2w one as well and that feels like a toy compared to this....., the 477mhz one only has 40 channels. belt clip and charger are included, and vehicle mounted sets are avaliable soon i'm told...
Pricing for the 476mhz one will be around 325.....
can check out uniden etc pricing i can get if you want....., I have some PRS and CB antenna in stock as well....
CB is 26mhz VHF, theres always a few on TM 2nd hand cheap get one of those
will move this post to the vendor section if needed
Chocolate not included

Thanks Jerry. I have hand helds; so want a truck mounted unit. If you could see what you can get a basic uhf 40 channel truck unit for I would be interested. I am still assembling the truck after its panel job so not in that much of a hurry.
