Greetings,

I have a '95 Surf SSR-G which I'm not game to put into the bush yet.. it's still shiney.. ;-)

Ok I need tyres for this ride.. 99% on-road, 1% mild off-road work so I'm thinking nice and quiet Pirelli Michelin etc.. Anyone got any contacts for a real steal deal ?

265/70R16

many thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve and welcome,

Sorry can't help you with sourcing of tyres in your area, my advice is to shop around nobody pays retail now days.
You have mentioned Pirelli and Michelin so you are not price driven  . My tyre of choice in the upper bracket although it doe's come with some road noise is the BFG A/T, has got the BLING factor, good for 90ks and will take you most places.

Now for some more advice , I started with a G Surf and after two off road excursions ---- repaired the damage and kept it as a shiny  . Got a real truck that i can take anywhere and don't have to worry (to much ) about the damage.

YOU WILL GET THE BUG,

FITZY.

Hiya thanks Fitz.

Yeah my hatred for cheap road tyres know no bounds, AND they last for ages so I get to hate them for years.. nice.. Wobbly slippy pos. :growl:

I pretty much figured that would be the case with my "shiney". Same applies with my families' shiney jetboat I took up the rapids and bashed it real hard.. not again methinks lest I eff it baaad. Though I think I should have taken someone experienced with me. Oh well.

Tyre prices - I haven't asked around locally yet (hrm they all know me mostly) and they always roll their eyes when they can't sell me their main brand.

If someone DOES have a real good price I can likely pay the freight and local fitting and still be better off.

Welcome. BFG A/Ts are really good and will hold value even if you decide to sell them after a few thousand kms...

yeah that was the first thing I did, but they have no H/T tyres listed, and it was suggested elsewhere that there were much cheaper options.

I got BFG ATs on the hilux fitted, balanced etc for $1310 for 5...but a question the tyre pressure is apparently 30psi on road but it seems very low? does that sound right?

Brett
I run 40psi in my Prado on the road with my BFG's, either the set of MT's or the AT's. Yes a bit harsher ride at 40 but it handles better, less sidewall wallow.

Off road I run 18 to 25 depending on conditions and load.

ok I got some firestone Destination H/T's fitted and they seem very light, quiet, and smooth. $240 each F&B incl GST. Lots more traction on the tarseal compared to the old baldies that wheelspun everywhere. I'll try them on the grass and sand, and open road next week.

Hi Steve and welcome :) your shiny jetboat is not a real jetboat untill you are 14 meters from the nearest water tryong to figure out how to get the trailer to the boat to re launch it :).

Brett11

30 PSI sounds about right you can run them as low as 18 offroad too much pressure (vehicle weight come into this too) will mean you increase your breaking distance.

There is very little of an offroad or AT tyre in contact even tho they are bigger, and when a tyre warm's up the air in it expands.

yes you use a little more fuel and wear them a little more at lower pressures but you can stop. Also put them up a little when heavy loaded or towing (in the back) only an extra 4 or 5 psi.

As far as choice no matter what you choose there is something else you could have saved for or is slightly better 3 months down the track
