Depending on your use, but many here will point you towards the 1KZ (3ltr turbo diesel). Good engines.

Ill second what fweddy said the 1KZ-TE is a great engine with lots of low down grunt. Turbo can make it a little interesting off road at times :?

What do you want to use your surf for?

Ive not had any probs with my 3L turbo diesel.
Mine is a 94.
Not sure about the later models..but the ones with spare wheel under neath have a smaller fule tank then the wheel at the back. Also if you go for coil springs all around much easier to do lift.

3.0 Diesel

Great engine, intercooled or not. Great tow wagon, great at 100km/h (1900-2000 rpm) and excellent mileage.

Honest opinion, avoid the petrols, cost alot to run, and realistically, when dealers can no longer import the older diesels (96 would be considered old) your vehicle will have better resale value.

Owned one and loved it.

A 96 Surf will handle its self well on Sand ,Gravel and mud trails with the right Tires.
They dont articulate very well in the front end because of the IFS (Independent front suspension). This means you tend to keep putting a front wheel in the air on the harder trials and lossing traction.

Would definatly recommend getting one with LSD in the rear (helps alot off road)
Also fitting an after market 2" suspension lift can also make a huge difference to the on and off road handling of a surf.

I am really happy with mine, a '92 3 ltr petrol. Its got a 2" lift and 32" Maxxis Mudder tyres and seems to go pretty well offroad plus is not too noisy on road.

Pretty thirsty tho, bro!!

cheers, can anyone tell me how much the 2.7 petrols really drink?? a friend of mine had a jeep 4lt petrol and i know that drunk like a fish, but in saying that, that was a 4lt straight 6, whereas the surf is a 2.7 4cyl

I would be inclined to go the diesel over the petrol. Off road will be better I would think and no wories crossing water with the addition of a snorkle. 3 l turbo have lots of grunt and power and Will leave my 2.4 td in the dust.

Do they make a 2.7 petrol? Mine is a 3L v6 and uses 15L per 100k open road at best and in the tow 20's round town.

My 1KZ-TE 3ltr Turbo Diesel uses approximately 11L / 100km on the open road and about 13-14L / 100km around town.

Brother has recently bought a 99 surf, 2.7 not sure on fuel consumption, but he only paid $8k, direct from the importer before the car yards could put their mark up on it.
