Here is the IMVDA site for fighting the proposed emissions rule. You can click on the bottom of pages to send an email to government to try to change the policy. It will have a big impact on diesel 4X4s coming into the country and probably quite an impact on petrol ones as well.

Website is http://www.crazycar.co.nz/

I have read the article and other arguements from both sides. Although it does not directly impact me in the short term (I don't have a diesel 4x4). There are a number of issues at stake.

Both govt and IMVDA have their vested interests in which way they want to go. Be that as it may, we do need to protect the environment or else we'll have to buy boats and go sailing rather than offroading at some stage in future (or so they say).

I have been thinking about this for some time and I think we as a group do need to be proactive about it and come clean (offence is the best defence policy). Just a simple matter of getting rid of catalyst converters in petrol engines, how many of us are guilty of that!!! I know I came close to it and decided against it and got a more freeflow cat converter instead.

Lets just put the cost of implementation aside, how practical would scientific emission testing be on an annual basis. I, for one, am in favour of a more controlled and scientific approach than someone trying to see whether the tail emits visible smoke for ten seconds or more.

I am not an environmentalist in any way shape or form, but do firmly believe in taking care of where we live (first and foremost) and work.

Lets keep emotions out of this debate and discuss this with an open mind as a community. Most of us are adults here and some of us may even be rational (me not included - I drive a Jeep - how rational is that).

Yep agree there but most diesels now are Euro diesels and these are way more efficient than petrols and produce less harmful emissions....I have a shiny diesel daily driver and a diesel bush basher, the bush basher is only used on trips and the occasional use. both are well maintained and don't smoke.

THe Govt's idea is badly flawed, people will hold on to their old shittas and this will keep the fleet older.
