Hi, well im getting a 1989 Hilux Surf (picking it up in about an hour

)
I've been reading these forums and know that if i go off road and get stuck i need to have rated tow hooks for anyone to help me, my question where/how do i mount them?
I'll be buying two of
http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails ... oductID=85 one for the front and one for the rear. They come with nuts and bolts, are those ok to use?
Can i just take the standard ones off and just bolt those on in their place?
Also i need a snatch strap, but there are about 3 different types listed here
http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductsList.a ... lection=13 what are their differences? I noticed they have different breaking strains and different amounts of elongation, which ones should be used (I'm thinking just 6m)
Thanks in advance for any help

THE HOOKS ARE JUST WHAT YOU NEED, AND THEY HAVE ht BOLTS AND NUTS SO USE THEM.
oops,caps lock on...
not sure about placement, would have to have a look, make sure its to the chassis tho
the snatch strap i would go for is the

have used these for many years and have nothing but praise for them.

Thanks for that, i'll get it ordered.
The surf is pretty much standard except it has 31" ATs, what are the first upgrades i should look at doing to it?
Im thinking 33" mud tires (probably off trademe) and a suspension raise (can anyone tell me how much that would cost?)

If you do a search on here there is tons of Surf/Hilux info.
What did you get, a 130 series or the earlier model? If it's an LN130 then hunt around for a later model set of front breaks. The rotors and calipers are smaller than the later 4 pot calipers.
33's will most likely need a 2in suspension and a 1-2in body lift. These changes including tires will require a cert.
All quite easily done but budget another $400 or so for the cert. Worth doing all your mods then getting a cert done.

Warning on the hooks - they come with imperial-thread-pitch bolts... if you are going to bolt the front hook into the factory threaded inserts (they will line up) then DO NOT use the bolts that come with them... go buy two new fine-pitch metric grade 8.8 bolts... in the back the hook will need a little engineering to make it fit - holes, plating, etc. Search the forums here, there is plenty of hook mounting tech to be found.
The 33" tyres will require a body lift to stop them rubbing, but they will fit with a 2" spring lift - although they will still rub when you're flexing up.
Do both, the truck will look and work good - but you'll need to factor in certification on top. a set of 50mm springs will set you back approx $750, and longer big-bore shocks will sting you $500. A body lift will cost around $200 for a kit, or you can make it yourself if you have the tools and save a little coin. Fitting is something you can do over a day with basic tools like jacks and axle stands and a beer fridge...
Also, take the plastic inner guard lining off in the front wheel arches and pound the spot-weld seam on the firewall end flat with a BFH, that seam will cut your tyres up quickly and efficiently
Good choice on your truck, and welcome

Its not, but if you're gonna do it then at least use the right bolts
You're right tho, crush-sleeve the chassis, don't use the chassis captive nuts.

Blond question but why not use captive nuts?

That looks like that factory bolts gave way not the nuts. Do a search and see what comes up. Surfs are a prick for hooks. I put up a post some where of what I have done. Most people use the captive nuts and new bolts with rated hooks. you might be able to get a good nut on the front hook with a spring washer if you can get it through the wee hole in the chassis rail.
