Time to get a new truck, have been keen on a surf only v6 manual, test drove one today(auto) , but lil disopointed, compared to the old mans pajero i use it didnt feel as robust...(gen 2 4 door v6 auto)



Be honest.. beter option would be a v6 manual surf over a v6manual pajero??

these are the only options im considering

will be used for towing the escudo and i bit of the old exploring,cruising
it will get lifted muds etc


honest opinions please, have around $5500 to spend if need be

3.0L V6 Pajero will have more grunt than V6 Surf, especially an auto surf. The 3.5L V6 Pajero has more grunt than the 3.0L Pajero but also sucks more gas, quite a bit from what I've seen, but the 3.5 sure has the balls.
Two friends have 3.5L V6 Pajeros and they both have worn valve guides and smoke badly when cold.

Personally I'd go for a 3.0L V6 Pajero over an auto V6 Surf. I haven't had any personal experience with a manual V6 Surf so can't make comment there, but can imagine them to be nowhere as powerful as the Pajeros.

Worn valve stems - its a Mitsubishi thing. Can be replaced with the heads on.

For what its worth, Both a pretty solid petrol motors, the 3.5 has a little bit more at the low end but really gets into it as the revs rise.

The Pajero IFS is the best in the business - no doubt on that one.

IF you do go for a 3.5. you get stronger running gear and gearbox, factory body lift etc. You can fit 33's with only a suspension lift, and not need to worry about blowing cv's, diffs etc.

Being able to run full time 4WD has its advantages as well, towing, wet roads etc.

Hate to say it but as a petrol tow vehicle the Pajero should win hands down you just have to feed it they are not the most efficient V6.

The V6 in the toyota is the same as the camry and designed as a cruseing motor rather than a torque delivering beast.

damn, you guys are legends, was expecting toyota toyota from all the biast ppl... im a fan of the pajero over the surf, big car tho, but feels way more robust, i keep thinkin of maybe the 3l turbo diesel surf but id prefure to stick with petrol

if you guys had a budget of 6grand and out for a truck for purpose of:

-fitting the DH bike in the boot
-off road driving for fun
-and towing the escudo to tracks
-daily driven car (coming fron race preped daily cars im not to exited about comfort issues)

me personaly .....

i would buy a early 90's hilux and transplant a commy 3.8V6 into it get it certed and come away from it with a hell cool to drive and awesum tow vehicle for around the 5k mark.... but thats me

yea, ive had my fun muckin round with cars, thank id rather just get a truck with the best motor and box and play with the other things...

really gets down to a v6 manual surf or a v6 manual pajero

just not sure about a diesel surf??

my manual 2.4 turbo deisel goes alright offroad but is sluggish on road but hey its only a 2.4!

i have a v6 manual surf and i love it... cos its mine. They use heaps of gass and don't have bugger all torque. They go ok if you rev them. Mine is the top of the range with all electrics and cruise control and comfy seats and is nice to drive on the open road. It has a 2inch body lift 2 inch spring 33's and lokkas.
I haven't had much experince with the mitsys but the short wheel base ones seem to go well off road.
Another to look at would be a v6 big horn. Kaney on here picked one up quite cheap that is in good nick. Think it was less than 4 grand but can't be certain.

my mate used to own a 96 v6 surf, lots of grunt and a bit longer in the arse to fit the bike. but since you threw in the option of a 3l diesel surf that would win hands down for me. had a pajero and a surf, loved the pajero's power but not the agricultural feel but and loved the surfs room and comfort but not the power (2.4dt) but i've heard very good things about the 3l diesel surfs. and with the price of gas at the mo...

yea thanks, that option sits in the back of my head, never been a fan of diesel, might have to go test one out this weekend

A guy I used to work with got a 3L one just before I left and LOVED it. My flatmate has a 3.0 Pajero he's about to sell and I wouldn't touch them. Every week theres something not quite right with it, was the same with his 2L diesel one and my old mans as well.

looks like a good wagon and anything with a 2.8 supra goes alright

thats the one cheaper then what i paid for mine and looks in better shape although mine is a hi lux as far as how they go on road will do alot of boy racers (no bullshit)they are that fast on take off. offroad still learning but so far looking to be better than my old v8 40,anyway let us know what you end up with,

yea will do, goin to test drive few more options this weekend, still thinkin 80% pajero but time will tell...
