Reefton in the new year?

Post by kiwipete »

I am thinking of a 3 day 2 night trip to the Reefton area over the new year holidays.
I had in mind 3,4,5 Jan, am open to ideas, but have to be back for work on the 7th.

I have a couple of tracks in mind, trying to keep it a low grade 3 and below, more of a scenic trip without the need for recovery gear above snatch straps and tow ropes, with a wee bit of fishing thrown in for luck.

If there is anyone interested from Chch in going over, post/pm/email up and maybee we can have a few quiet ones somewhere and discuss plans etc.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

We got rained off with that trip, I went there (Reefton ) later in week, but there was still too much water. Couldnt get to the Hut by myself, only made it about 1/3 of the way there cos of a washout.

As I said in the origonal post, will be staying away from areas needing a winch, I do not want to go there yet.
This is to be a leisurely scenic type trip, but going places you cant in a car.

I have done Big River before and found it to be a long and boring trip, but this is open to the others who want to tag along.

Thoughts are, Waipuna Tunnels, Montgomerie Hut, Slab hutt creek?
No name Rd?

Most likely be tenting too.

Pete we will be keen to catch up with you. We are planning on being in Reefton til the 3rd I think. We are there with another family for a week or so. Keen to head back up Slab hut Creek and Montgomeries. We are also planning to do the bicycle track too if the ruts aren't too big.
We are just taking it day by day once we get there, nothing really planned as yet.

We are planning a trip up Station Creek in the new year. I haven't been up there since I left the West Coast two years ago. Can anyone tell me if there have been many changes up there since then. Can you still drive to the flat?? I'm not wanting to drive through the flat as it gives the kids a chance to stretch their legs>>
Keep the shiny side up.

The track still follows the river up to the flat, with a few tracks ducking through the scrub in places. A lot of the old side tracks have been opened up again recently with a bit of chopping and shovelling, a few good mud holes to conquer if you are keen.
I'm looking forward to getting back in there after Xmas.

Hi pete, I may be over there yet, most probably heading to Conway for a family trip, will keep in touch
Thought you might like to see a couple of pics taken in Slab hut creek, don't be put off but depending on how far down it you venture, we went right round and winched up petrol head hill, but you can always turn around anytime
.....no pics of the hill but here's a few at the end of the creek

We also went up to Montgomerie hut at about midnight (3 weeks ago) hence the spotties on the truck, the track up there is fine now

glad I'm not the only one that found this. I would say for this reason people go playing when they get to the other end.
