Im wanting to convert my cruiser to disc brakes.I was wanting some advice on the best way to do this.I think i can swap the birfields and knuckles with hilux/surf ones, but as my rear diff is blown to hell i thought i might be able to replace both front and rear units with something better which already has disc brakes.

I am also converting to power steering and it is spring over.

Any advice would be apprieciated.

Cheers

If your toyota is latter than 75-76 you should be able to fit the complete swivel housing outwords complete with disc's ,hubs stubaxles etc
The brake lines will need to be modifided, and the residual valve in the master cyclinder to the front brakes will need to be removed.
You will also need to fit a proposition valve to the rear ,the one i use is from a HQ Holden

you may want to look at something like 60-series axles which are disc front and drum rear, or 80-series axles (which are coil-setup so maybe you could do a coily-40 :) ) which are disc front and rear.

Things to check are the position of the diff head in the axles to suit where your driveshafts run.

Hope we will get photos of this mod process :)

 why change the axles??????????????and as for 80 series diffs the front one post 93 are smaller=weaker and fukn expensive 60,70,80 are all wider than the 40 series(so you might aswell look at buying a bead blowin gq troll )

use mid 80s hilux discs you wont find a cheaper easier option.

 looks like people are trying to lead you in the wrong path,do ya coil conversion using the 40 series diffs (like i have!),get either 80 series or rangie front trailing arms,im using 80 series coils (220lb)custom make a panhard rod ,shift the axle foward an inch and youre in business ,as for the rear go 3 link a/arm setup(no need for panhard rods and less shit to bend)this is the best and #### the rest!   as all 40 series have #### all up travel with the leaf setup, coil it this way and youle have heaps

Whos leading who? I was just responding to his request for info.

Agreed, 40-series axles with the Hilux discs is the best simplest cheapest option, but not what he was asking for.

And why the f&%k am I trying to defend myself anyway :P I must be feeling grumpy... maybe I'm stuck at home babysitting all bloody day (second day in a row!) when I should be down at the shed fitting the last few bits to my MU.

Oh well... If you want to coil it I have a spare set of Rangie front arms and coils and bits and pieces here for sale...

Thanks guys for the advice.Im now more confused than ever.
Was originally thinking of coils but probably requires more skills than i have.I've found a disc brake kit from man-a-fre.com which is a basic bolt on job-no axle splitting, original knuckles etc also comes with cross drilled discs and 4 pot calipers,so might just fork out for those.

Cheers heaps

Good luck with the kit, but please keep us posted on what you're doing... theres too much inane dribble and not enough technical 'blood and guts' on here for my liking :)

As for bubs and the shed, shes been going down there with me since I got it and shes pretty good normally, but currently has a cold and is being a bit of a 'special needs kid' because of it, so I get f-all done... I'm better not going, cos I still get f-all done but I can lounge around on the sofa and watch monster garage re-runs on sky :P

I guess any three year old girl who can get the right spanner, run round and find the washer you just dropped, get your beer and fall over a pile of scrap metal and just get up again and carry on with scratches from it is pretty well trained :)

do your front disk conversion with mid 1980's hilux gear mate, soooo easy and cheap, makes the world of difference,i was thinking about doing rear disks on my fj40 but after having done the front im not to concerned about it now, the drums on the back are more than suficient braking for the rear. as for the rear diff on your truck being blown, just get another diff man. plenty of diffs around for bugger all, maybe $100'ish, or if you want an lsd, theres one on trade me for $650 heavy duty fully rebuilt from diff shop in chch.

after seeing the price of buying  front and rear setup off a later model cruiser(anything else would be shit and embarrasing)with disks front and rear i just did the hilux conversion, much cheaper
