Terrano winch

Post by kiwipete »

Just curious if anyone has mounted a winch to their terrno, or if you know of someone who has.
I'd just like to get an idea of how it is mounted in relation to the front chasis members, height and forward placement.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Not sure if its the same as the surf but here are some early pics of mine going on. I've gone for nice and high and have reinforced it alot since these pics ie tie backs to the chassis to compensate for the height. The fairlead is on and isnt to bad actually for approach angle (reason i was getting it up and out the way). 13 bolts hold it all on in the end

Well I have decided to go with modding my winch tray similar to what Cloggy has done in his post http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=9278 , with front bars similar to these protuding from the sides.

Supported underneath with a support similar to this one on this winchbar.

This will allow me to retain the factory bumper with indicators, as the winch will sit just inside it, meaning the bottom will need trimming for the winch to recess into it a little.
And a set of rear bars at the same time like this.

Apart from fabricating the mounting plate, I think I can take care of the tube work ok. Would 65mm od look ok, being what is used for the nudge bar I currently have?

Here are the rest of my pics for some ideas if you need them. Ive been in the garage for the last two days building the mounts for it all. I hope the terrano is a lot easier than the surf was. If you need a hand building anything just give me a yell (mounting plate etc) happy to help.

After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to make something like this for my winch to mount to.

Image

This shows a side profile of the main bracket, one of two. I will probably get the main centre bracing drilled with 75mm holes to lighten it up somewhat.
The plate will be 6mm and I will be using M10 & M12 8.8 bolts, except for the one at the end of the top bracket, this is a M8 8.8, on the existing chasis bracket with a nut welded to the inner side of it.
The twin side tubes will extend approximatley another 400-450mm from each side. I had thought of welding them to a plate and bolting this to the side plate, with a hoop running over the top of the winch as per the previous picture in a post above.

What do you think? Is here anything I should modify/change?
