transfer case not dissengaging

My surf has the add 4wd system and a while ago the vaccume solinoids for the front diff packed up so to get it in and out of 4wd i had to swap the hoses over, no biggy. Now the transfer case won't dissengage. How do they work? electric? can i manually dissengage it?
