Hi i have a LN130 surf that wont start, i have had the stater to bits an cleaned an it still wont start. the starter motor just engages but wont turn the motor over it just clicks . has anyone got any ideas cheers :scratch:

Did you replace the contacts in it ?
They can wear out

Battery??? Just a geuss. Otherwise it'll prob be contacts if it can't carry enough current it won't turn over.

the solinoides out or make sure the small wire is hooked up to the solinoid in the starter motor

i have a spare motor if you need it, my cressida does a simler thing but starts eventualy, where abouts are ya?

Also check your main battery-to-engine earth strap, could possibly be that.

If you have a volt meter measure the battery voltage when you attempt to crank.

If it's 9v or less then it's not enough to start the truck and your battery or alternator are shagged.

If it's more than 9v then it's the starter at fault and it's time to pull it out and tear it down for a rebuild.

Contacts, bearings and brushes are all pretty cheap and they are a relatively easy starter to rebuild.

If you have to bash it to make it start...it will be the contacts..this method will only work a few times.

Dont get new contacts from Toyota..they will want about $60...go to buy some after market ones...mine cost $13.20 from Butlers in CHCH

And bash carefully, if you damage the internals of the motor then the first attempt to turn it will cause irreversible damage to it and you'll need a new starter. Depending on the motor type it could have magnets glued to the casing of the motor itself, which severe blows can shatter.

Still, it often works if you're careful and lucky

Any joy with fixing it tho? And did you try powering it up while you had it out? It might be a good idea to pull it out again and drop into an auto sparky for a quick checkup, as it will probably only take them 2 minutes to confirm a fault (if any) for you. I know Auto Electric City in Chch are pretty good, and if anything it might only cost $15 (this is their standard checking-out-your-crook-alternator charge I believe, so I doubt a starter motor will be any more) to have it diagnosed.

Failing all else I think I have a 2.4 diesel starter here that may or may not be the same... Feel free to bowl over and have a look. I could be convinced to part with it if its going to be of use to you... (Beer makes the world go round )

These days you definitely don't want to be hitting your starter motor.

With the old style with the solinoid on the top you could get away with this but these days with the gear reduction starters the solinoid is underneath and you are actually hitting the motor itself which is not a good thing at all.

replace the washer & point thingis
cleaning just wont cut it!

i still waiting for sum points to arrive as im in tarras of all places.

Definitely replace the plunger and contacts but it's also worth doing the brushes and cleaning the commutator and doing any bearings or brushes whilst you have it off.

If the solinoid is worn so will the starter itself.
