80 series power steer box needed

Post by Jungle »

Have had issues with the power steer in the 80 series from the first day i picked it up. Cracked reservoir mount and leaking reservoir meant remounting on the firewall with a 100 series one. Then the power steer just ran out of the power stuff. Had pump rebuilt. It really was stuffed. And now i have an issue with the steering becoming incredibly heavy after highway speed driving and then slowing down into a driveway. The steering almost locks up. Another issue is the power steer fluid getting cooked and becoming black within days after replacing it. Stuck valve somewhere maybe? Have tested pressures in system and the pressure drops back at highway speed like it should.

Next step is to throw another power steer box at it and and see what happens.

Anyone have a power steer box lying around.

Cheers

Has it got the speed-sensitive vacuum solenoid thingy on the pump? You could try disconnecting that to see if it makes a difference? Just a thought

Had a quick look and have nothing electrical on the back of the pump. Must be an older version.
The fluid does get discoloured very quickly but the pump was rebuilt very recently and the pressures seem to be behaving themselves.
Still reckon its the steering box as the lock is more limited one way than the other.
Keen to trial that other steering box and see what that does.

We wound the power steer pump pressure up to 1500 psi before heading down south and she went well but still siezed up occasionally.

Any luck finding that power steer box sig?

cheers
