well here the situation, was out and bout few days ago,was sitting beside river looking at where to cross it,and pajero stalled,(wasnt in it at time),got it going finished playing around went home, now pajero doesnt want to start very well, glow it, turn key starter works great just wont fire, glows all good, bat all good, does start after pumping loud pedal couple of times but then wont idle, will idle if choke or loud pedal used.
what would be the cause of this?
was thinking fuel pump maybe
2.5 td 4d56t if that any help

From my limited knowledge of the subject
I have a 2.8 TD 4M40T but the theory is the same.
I had random stalling, very difficult starting without having the pump the accerator thru the floor!
Worst thing is it was getting much much worse week by week.
And as you say the idling was bad, had to keep my foot on the peddle to keep it from dying
I also had huge plumes of smoke when the idle was bad...
Sadly it cost me 1700 bucks for a complete fuel pump recondition
I tried all other options, anything to get around the issue...

Sam two things.
Air lecking into system.
Fuel pump.
Been there and my fix was installing a lift pump so my filter was positive pressure while running.
Check the fuel rails around the injectors my have a crack somewere.
