Anybody?....
I saw a 1988 Surf that I am pretty damn sure had a set of ARBs today driving up an incredible grade today without slipping from any wheels!!

It was unreal...I was dumbstruck in the Rugger... and what made it worse it was a scree slope...

Bet they dont make them for Ruggers anyway..

Lockers

Yes you are right they are talking about diff lockers. Do they do auto lockers for 40s like a detroit locker or something cheaper then arb and great for mainly offroad use

lockers

Post by wopass »

after watching the video we took of my truck doing the sumit track at thompsons and loosing a lot of forward momentum due to slippage from front and rear  im really interested in getting lockers for the truck,

LOCK RIGHT seems to be the best value for money as far as i can see, sure they arent as good as ARB air lockers but then they arent $2 grand plus compressor either :? going on the prices of them from U.S it would work out about $750 - $800 at my door ...'ish... for front and rear including freight.

going to have a good look at a set when a mate gets his and then make up my mind about it.

So why do ya think an auto locker is not as good as an air or electric selectable locker??

For one, the auto locker is so simple, encased totally in the diff, with no other external parts to damage, break, ripp off, or other wise crap out when they really didn't need to.

Reliability of simplicity i say.

If you can get an auto locker for your 40, then get it. You won't notice it on the road untill you really feed it to it around corners in the wet.

Even so, your unlikely to drive like that in the wet any way.

I have test driven a few vehicles (a couple of hilux's and a MWB Cruiser) with detroits in the back to see if all the rumours were true.
They aren't half as bad and crude as some people make thm out to be.

You have no leaking o rings forcing oil out of your axle seals, no compressor lines to get snagged on debri in the middle of a bog and get ripped off, no solenoids or electronics to get wet in the same situation.

Go the auto locker.

I have done some pretty seriouse research into this locker thing over the last three or four months, and have come to the conclusion that in any application the following combination seems to be the most cost effective and practical:

Detroit Full Carrier Locker in the rear, for strength, as i have seen a few carrier kits sitting on the shelves in peoples garages.

Then an LSD or simply one of the Carrier kits that replace the spider gears in the carrier such as the kit suprasurf can supply.

Hope thats usefull.

I get you the contact # for the Diff Shop in Chch. He specialises in Detroits lockers for cars (drifting and boy racers eg skylines etc) and in 4wd applications.
Knows his shit anyway, even if you just want to get some info on P&A.

Pete.

I wonder if the SURF diffs are compatible with the Rugger ones, the shocks were...and most of the parts in the Rugger seem to be Toyota.

If that was the case then I could score some decent diffe for the old Rugger.

Tell me shut up when ever you like, but you will definatly be looking for strengthened CV's with a front locker in a 40.
It is THE weakest point in the drive train.
Especially when locked, turning those giant rollers.
Do the rear first.
If you convince your self you really really need the front locked too, then give it a go if you have to.

The other side of the locker debate is that with lockers you actualy reduce the chance of damage to the drive train.
Being locked front and rear means you can adopt a much less aggressive driving style, as the lockers enable you to traverse terrain slowly and completely in control, as opposed to attacking with momentum and bouncing and spinning etc.
When locked, the bouncing and spinning is a lot more harmfull to the drive train than when open obviously.

Thats my reasoning behind getting one. So i don't have to charge at stuff as hard.
Unless my diffs are recontouring the track of course
