Big tyres on FJ40

as the title may elude to, I want to put bigger tyres on my 40.
How big has anyone gone without doing a springover or any form of lift.
I was thinking of 36"/37", but as my 33s nearly rub on the back already, I'm aware that I will have to cut or even modify the rear even more, but I refuse to lift or do one of those stupid spring over thingies.
what do folks reckon

And upgraded brakes, wheel spacers (or 60 series axles), and lots more horses than a 2F/3B wil provide...

when I had my short wheelbase 40 lots of moons ago I had 825 SAT's on it which is 33" (they may have measured a little higher being crossply cases with retread caps?) and they rubbed on the body even with a set of high springs in it. Phil cutout the sides of the rear gaurds to match the shape of the inner gaurds but the tyres still rubbed. I dont think you can go bigger without lifting or SOA?

dino, when i mean long i mean 2 maybe 3 inches longer, 2 inch longer shackles give about 1 inch lift

I've found longer shackles work well on the rear, but on the front (aside from possible problems with changing the camber - which only matters on the road), what you gain in lift you lose at the front since the shackles hang that much lower and seem to find every decent sized rock, and are the first thing to hit any banks. It effectivey turns your approach angle to shit.

theres a dealer here in nelson that seems to think hes gonna be able to bolt on a set of 35s onto his one.... with no mods, and a standard petrol motor to turn them...

Bolting them on is fine - & will probably be OK with a little guard trimming if he just wants it look nice on the street, and the old 2F will turn them OK for normal road driving. Stopping will be a bigger problem if it's got standard drum brakes. Flexing up the springs will cause some serious rubbing, and he'll spend a lot of time in low 1st on any hills - it'll drive them OK, but there'll be no power or revs available to spin them. With something like Simexes or Super Swampers, it'll probably go OK, but I doubt if it'll be able to clear the treads when they fill up if he's running radials. I'd be interested to know how he gets on since I'd consider 35's for my next set....

take a leaf or two out of the spring pack, cut the rear of the guards slightly so as to fit the tyres and put a small lift in the body too, like maybe a 2 inch... a bit more flex and room to artic... not that the bog standard setup flexs hell well, but play with the spring pack for a good combo of flex without compromising possible axle wrap...
go forth and conquer.....
