Just wondering if any one out there has replaced the rear bumper from their surf for a steel one.Mine has rusted and i thought it would make sense to beef it up and possibly add a hitch reciver by taking the old off and replacing with 4" steel box or Usection.Have seen some plans on the net for an idea butha vent got round to making one.

I've been researching this for my Prado too, one thing to make sure of is that the bumper is made of thinner steel than your chassis rails. Otherwise when you hit something it'll bend them instead

yeah thats for sure

. i found a good site relating to surfs and 4runners that you may be ableto adapt. it is
http://www.sonoransteel.com/store_custom_bumpers.html
i am going to attemp to make one for my self. Have reasonable welding skills and mechanical knowledge. 1 question tho, i presume i would need certification to keep it all legal

I've been reading up on it and as long as you stay within 5mm of the original OEM bumper it doesnt need certing. Also remember you must have no protrusions outside the front face of the bumper. ie, in profile the forward most point must be the main face of the bumper.
I;m sure one of the other guys can confirm this

I had a LN130 surf and have just replaced it with a KZN surf at great expense

BOTH have those $%&*#$ rear bumpers (chrome outside, recycled Nissan Sunny inside)....
The Toyota engineers have a lot to answer for with that bumper design - the chrome against the steel means that any salt or water gets trapped between, and I reckon it starts a galvanic action too which makes it rust faster.
Someone is going to make lots of money out of selling aftermarket rear bumpers for surfs....
Does anyone have any rustproofing ideas?
I figured I'd use rust converter followed by good ole roofing paint (on the inside)
